APEX SK-393-C Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

5 out of 5 eggs Excellent, compact size 01/26/2014

This review is from: APEX SK-393-C Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: I have 2 of these, they are great for being a compact size and able to take a full size ATX motherboard. They have more front USB ports and take more drives than similarly priced items, while being about the smallest ATX sized cases.

Cons: The front USB ports are upside down.

1 out of 5 eggs Beware - ships with outdated BIOS 06/12/2012

This review is from: MSI H67A-G43 (B3) LGA 1155 Intel H67 2 x SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Lots of addon slots. Good price.

Cons: Ships with outdated BIOS

Other Thoughts: I purchased the motherboard with a G530 CPU, and when turning on there was no beep, nothing displayed. The fans started and that was all. Eventually after trying many things I purchased a G620 CPU which is supported by V3.0 of the BIOS. It turns out that it shipped with V3.1 of the BIOS. Unfortunately there is no way to update the bios without having a supported CPU on hand.

I put in requests to the manufacturer web site, together with all information about the motherboard and CPU, and their response was the standard "check all the power cables, do a bench test", etc. I would expect the manufacturer to know what is going on.

Now I have a working system, but also a slew of extra parts I purchased while trying to figure out what was faulty.

TP-LINK TL-WN727N Wireless N150 USB Adapter, 150Mbps, w/WPS Button, IEEE 802.11b/g/n, WEP, WPA/WPA2

Pros: Works with Ubuntu Linux. It needs a small change to get it working - edit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and add a line - blacklist rt2800usb

Cons: Under Linux I only get 54 MBPS although I get 130MBPS on a different laptop with the same wireless router. Perhaps Linux support for the higher speed is not there
