Pros: it had GB ethernet
Cons: WLAN drops, painfully slow transfer to the internal drive. N/A band coverage is not good
Other Thoughts: **I purchased this from N*wE*g 0 they had a better sale price**
I had such high hopes for this device.
I needed to upgrade from old D-Link wireless G device due to all the wireless devices in use in our home now.
I needed an external drive to store/backup pics/videos of the kids.
I wanted to upgrade my LAN to 1 Gbps
It fails miserably at 2 of 3 of them
Data transfer to the internal drive over a 1 Gbps connection is so slow the fresh paint on your wall will dry faster - not sure which is less fun to wait for though.I wanted a complete backup of ~450 GB of data - pics/videos - the transfer rate is ~1MB/s (ususally less) - not good. I tried letting it run all night - only to have it failed after 100 MB.I have now set it up as the destination for my Windows backup - that seems to work OK but I don't know how long it takes at night.
Wireless - like some others have said the range on the N-A band is not good. 1 wall and 12 feet and it struggles. I have adjusted the position of the router to help (rotated 45 degrees) - and it does help some - but the need for external antennas is apparent.
Lately the wireless has been dropped multiple times per day - both channels A/B and N/A at the same time. sometimes it will come back in a minute or 2, other times not at all and a reboot (pull the power cord out) is required. Occasional pulling the power cord has failed to resolve the issue, pushing the power button on the front did fix that one - but it also resets the admin name/password to the default.
Once all the networking failed - WLAN and LAN i had to remove power form the unit for 30 seconds to get it back.
That's a deal breaker - if the WLAN is not stable with 99% up-time it is a expansive doorstop.
that old D-Link that i bought refurbished for under $20 was 50x more stable - i just needed more bandwidth.
If you want to stream a movie in its entirety w/o interruption this is not for you.
If you like having your kids/wife pester you constantly because the 'wireless is broken.. again' than this is your device!
It is easy enough to RMA it - but w/o another device for a few weeks to a month is ridiculous. They can put a hold on you credit card for the ridiculous retail price and send you the replacement first - IDK if I trust that though - they cant get WLAN right...
Buying another manufactures device that works properly is going to be my solution + an external HDD or NAS
Pros: easy setup - after software install
storage built in
Cons: you have to install the software to use it.
WLAN streaming to either 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz is very good
range is OK.
only has USB2
Other Thoughts: If they can address the slow data transfer rate to the internal drive this thing would be a good solution for a lot of folks.
As it is i set my backup to backup to the drive off hours so the transfer speed factor is minimal.
Add USB3 so we can expand the storage externally.
