Great for Video Encoding
Pros: Really sped up my video encoding compared to my old AMD Phenom II X4 940. Went with 4770 because I don't overclock but do some virtualization. This CPU Benchmarked at 9523 CPU Marks using the Passmark 8.0 program which is only slightly slower than the 4770K, and Windows 8 rates the WEI at 8.2. Also like the low TDP of the intel, my case is much cooler now than it was with the AMD and electric bill should be lower now. Power usage was a big factor in my decision process.
Cons: Price. Heats up very fast under load
Overall Review: Great upgrade coming from a 4-core AMD. The Intel threading performance really rocks in Powerdirector 11 as well as DX Optics photo processing software.
Disappointed
Pros: Price
Cons: High failure rate. Lasted less than a year and a half of moderate home use.
G.SKILL TridentX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-1600C7D-16GTX
Pros: Performance, responsiveness, removable upper heatsink.
Cons: Cost, Tall Heatsinks
Overall Review: I had been using Ballistix Tracer 8-8-8-24 and was mostly happy, but some large photo editing software was a little sluggish. After considering overclocked ram, instead I replaced the Ballistix with the low CAS TridentX and my system is now snappier to use. Large folders of photos load quicker, and memory-hog photo editing software is much more responsive. Interestly, benchmarks don't show much difference between the Ballistix and TridentX, but in real world usage it is noticeable and I am very happy I upgraded to TridentX with the low CAS 7.
OCZ Vector 150 480GB SSD
Pros: Performance 5 Year Warranty 3.5" adapter included Acronis included
Cons: No SATA cable included. Toolbox Software very basic
Overall Review: This SSD is good performer. Even with the drive well over half full and installed as the OS drive I consistently get the following very respectable performance: Windows 8.1 BIOS Boot time is 9.6 seconds. 540MB Sequential Read 522MB Sequential Write 96423 IOPS Random Read 90407 IOPS Random Write The drive comes bundled with the 3.5 inch adapter bracket and screws as well as branded tier-1 cloning software you can download directly from the vendor website. It does not come with a SATA cable, though. Overall a very good value and hopefully I don't have to test out the 5 year warranty. You can download utility software 'toolbox' from the vendor website, which provides basic drive info and stats, but some competitor's software is much nicer, but not required to run the drive. With the bracket, Acronis 2013 cloning software and warranty, it's definitely and great value of features, size, speed, and cost... if you get it for a good price. Would buy again.
Very Nice! Crucial Ballistix Tactical Tracer 4GB DDR3 1600
Pros: These are excellent! The 8-8-8-24 fast timings allow them perform at the same level as the 1866Mhz version that has the slower 9-9-9-27 timings. Windows 8 WEI measures 8.2 for this RAM. 1.5 volts is nice, too. The LED lighting is very nice, but I like the MOD utility that lets you monitor temperature and settings, as well as configure a thermal shutdown if desired. These are fairly low-profile, too. I'm running in (4x4GB) configuration, and the temperature is a consistent 34 degrees C.
Cons: Little bit snug getting them into the memory slots... be very careful to make sure to fully seat them.
Overall Review: Outperformed expectations. I thought these would be average and they turned out to be excellent (and fast)
Great 120mm Fan
Pros: Quiet, solid build, rubber isolation mounts, fan airflow direction arrows on side of housing, adapter for non-speed controlled use.
Cons: Makes you want to buy more of them.
Overall Review: Great little fan, strong airflow. Quiet.
