Pros: I am using this as a PXE boot server and for that purpose it is great. Installed RAM and hard drive (switched to SSD as soon as the drive arrived) and installed Windows 8.1 and then upgraded 10 without issue. I even did another second clean install of Windows 10 from USB stick to make sure my problems were not software related.
Quite well suited for its current role as a headless server
Cons: The Sata bus resets every once in a while. I have had 3 different drives in it and all do the same thing so I suspect it it the (flimsy) sata cable since it happens on all drives I have tried. It does cause the computer to freeze for about 30 seconds now and then because of this (very random and no set interval) and it is an annoyance but I use this on a tech bench and I don't want to lose it while I wait for RMA.
Other Thoughts: Improve the sata cable so that it is less prone to failure.READ FULL REVIEW
This review is from: StarTech ESATAPLT2LP 2-Port Low Profile SATA to eSATA Plate Adapter
Pros: Nice to get two Esata ports on a low profile bracket.
Cons: I assumed Startech knew what they were doing by now but the bracket is backwards and the screw notch is on the wrong side for a Low Profile bracket so it doesn't fit quite right.
If I had looked closely at the picture I would have noticed that ahead of time.
Pros: PCIe x 2
Cons: Tried to use with 3 - Mediasonic 4 bay enclosures, and one Black X dual drive dock.
No matter what I did it would never see more than 4 hard drives. When I turned on an enclosure I could see the PM port show up in the utility but not the drives.
When I turn on an enclosure you could also see the controller cycle through the drives like it should, they just never show up.
Tried an external DVD drive with the enclosure and the DVD drive did not work (showing power failure in Windows Device Manager) but the the DVD drive works fine on both an SIL and ASMedia esata controller (They also have PM).
When the DVD was on I could never get more than 3 out of 4 drives in any one enclosure to show up. All very bizarre and after hours of trying I give up.
I would assume the controller card works OK since I tested each enclosure on each port and they work fine if they are the only enclosure turned on, it just doesn't allow Port Multiplier on more than one port at a time or support more than 4 drives maximum from what I can see. I suspect it is a driver issue but it could be firmware also.
I am using an ASUS H87M-PRO with a I3-4330 and Windows 8 Pro
Other Thoughts: I would go near this card if you want it for it's Port multiplier, it has some very bad issues.READ FULL REVIEW
