A bit faster

Western Digital Raptor WD360GD 36.7GB 10000 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 1.5Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive
Western Digital Raptor WD360GD 36.7GB 10000 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 1.5Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Faster than 7200. Didn't notice any overheating that would require specialized cooling (I have a front case fan directed right in front of them anyway). Not an apreciable amount of noise, unless you're using this in a media center, and then it's only noisy when tracking, NOT reading.

Cons: Marginal increase in speed, even in performance raid with two drives (may be the controller on my motherboard). Only 36GB, get a couple of 70+GB's for a bit more storage.

Overall Review: Pricey for the size. I just have two in performance raid for booting. Only the operating system and main programs are on these drives for system performance. Have two Seagate 250GB's in for media storage. This is a multifunction PC for a workstation (Photoshop-professionally used) and as a media center PC. The noisy case is located in the office-seperate from the theater area.

Pros: Replaced an ailing NEC drive. Didn't load any drivers. Haven't tried Lightscribe yet. Worked right out of the packaging.

Cons: None yet.

Overall Review: Asus A8V Deluxe. 4400 X2. 2 gigs of Geil Value. .5TB of RAID. ATI AIW 9006. Dual monitors for Photoshop...

soilid and shiny

JUST PC JPC-P4SF550C 550 W ATX12V Power Supply
JUST PC JPC-P4SF550C 550 W ATX12V Power Supply

Pros: It works and is fairly inexpensive. Solid voltages and I can't hear the fan over my somewhat quiet machine.

Cons: Fairly large, may prove some difficulties mounting in ATX mid and smaller cases.

Overall Review: Replaced a failed J-PAC 500w unit(go figure) with this shiny PSU. Should be the last weak link in my budget machine to upgrade. The J-PAC PS came with a cool looking cheap-o case so I knew it'd eventually fail.

Arctic Silver 5 High-Density Polysynthetic Silver Thermal Compound AS5-3.5G
Arctic Silver 5 High-Density Polysynthetic Silver Thermal Compound AS5-3.5G

Pros: Better than stock.

Cons: Shoulda got a larger quantity for the price.(There is a close option for that here).

Overall Review: Dropped the temps on the proc a bit. Always has over stock grease. Totally engineered for break in and long term.

It's windows and stable!

Microsoft Windows XP Professional With SP2
Microsoft Windows XP Professional With SP2

Pros: A stable version of windows (which most software is compatible with). I'd preferred using 2000Pro, but the networking and performance of this OS has since changed my mind.

Cons: I'm a Linux type o guy. Could run Redhad with a windows emulator pushing XP even faster, but it's the ol' ladys graphic workstation so all that debugging is out of the question...

Overall Review: Been running this OS on multiple systems for a while. Easy to network and stable. Still not as powerfull as a Linux based OS, but as user friendly as ever, even with all the 'noise' going on in the background...

good size, good price

Seagate BarraCuda 7200.8 ST3250823AS 250GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 1.5Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive
Seagate BarraCuda 7200.8 ST3250823AS 250GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 1.5Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Quite a bit of memory for the price. It's a Seagate.

Cons: First one worked for a week or so, then 'died'.

Overall Review: Ordered another, thinking the dead one was a flop. RMA'd the first to go with a new one in RAID. Working flawlessly together now. I only gave four eggs for having the first a week before it puked and Newegg's RMA explaining Fed Ex delivery on the RMA and getting a replacement shipped back UPS. Other than that, everything I've gotten for this system was through Newegg for obvious reasons (awesome prices and service!) And of course with Fed Ex optioned shipping is a combination that is more than exemplary.
