Lenovo ThinkPad Black USB Wired Ultimate Compact Keyboard with TrackPoint - US English
  • Owned For: 1 day to 1 week

5 out of 5 eggs Great! CAUTION WITH WIN 8 !!! 12/29/2012

This review is from: Lenovo ThinkPad Black USB Wired Ultimate Compact Keyboard with TrackPoint - US English

Pros: I've used T-4x & T-6x ThinkPads for years and loved them. When I built a desktop, I got the older full-sized SK-8835 add-on keyboard, which worked great until I went from XP to Windows 8.

Why the problem? Because Win8 virtually demands a "Windows" key between between Left Control and Left Alt keys. Theoretically, you can, using the ThinkPad Keyboard Mapper utility, remap Right Alt into the Windows key.

However, I did need a smaller keyboard, and since almost never used the TouchPad (just the red TouchStick) that was OK.

Cons: Note!!! There is only a CapLock indicator light but no NumLock or ScrollLock lights (if you used this with a real ThinkPad, it would be no problem as the indicator lights are on the screen.)

The biggest problem I had is that after installing Win8 and using this keyboard, my password would not work (part of it is in the NumberPad area.)

Other Thoughts: After several hours of experimentation, and Googling, there is an answer. For some crazy reason, Win8 by default, sets the NumLock default to "ON". This means you have to manually un-NumLock before entering a password in the NumberPad area.

There is a fix!!!! According to numerous sources (including MicroSoft), this is set in the Registry (using RegEdit.exe) by

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Keyboard\InitialKeyboardIndicators

Mine was originally set to a nonsensical string "InitialKeyboardIndicators = 2147483648" (actually all 4 systems I have have been set to this)

The documented options are:

0 - Turn all indicators Off (NumLock, CapsLock, ScrollLock)
1 - Turn CapsLock On
2 - Turn NumLock On
3 - Turn CapsLock and NumLock On
4 - Turn ScrollLock On
5 - Turn CapsLock and ScrollLock On
6 - Turn NumLock and ScrollLock On
7 - Turn all indicators On (NumLock, CapsLock, ScrollLock)

Using the above, I entered "InitialKeyboardIndicators = 0"

Problem solved - I now love this keyboard!

CORSAIR XMS 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWINX2048-3200C2PT
  • Verified Owner
  • Owned For: less than 1 day

Pros: Probably great memory for the the right machine; Corsair's Tech Support was 1st class with my issue.

Cons: I just read a similar 1-Egg review for another Dell - a 6400. I have just had an identical experience with an OptiPlex GX-270. Although Dell says this will take DDR 333 and 400 MHz; 128, 256, 512, and 1024 MB modules, this is UNTRUE for many Dell models with certain CPUs - they willtake only 333 MHz (PC-2700) modules, even with the most recent BIOS flash - A07. In my case, the machine refused to boot entirely - no BIOS screen at all.
Unfortunately, NewEgg held to their NO REFUND, NO EXCHANGE policy :-(
To Corsair's credit, they will RMA and exchange for VS1GB333 (their Tech Support was great, and, unfortunately, they know this problem well) as well as honor NewEgg's refund offer.
All this does is reinforce my opinion that I would never buy or recommend a Dell - their support sucks, their specifications are wrong (or lie), their motherboards are proprietary and horribly documented, etc. etc.

Other Thoughts: NewEgg needs to re-evaluate their no-refund policy when a customer does "due-diligence" and selects the right memory on the basis of the manufacturer's specs and it turns out it doesn't work.

Hitachi GST Travelstar 7K100 HTS721010G9AT00 (0A25015) 100GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache IDE Ultra ATA100 / ATA-6 2.5

Pros: Fast speed, no additional firmware flashing needed.

Cons: Slightly noiser than previous Travelstar drive

Other Thoughts: I had some serious doubts about getting this drive due to concerns that IBM had their own firmware, and that flashing this would be a big deal. As it turns out, this pertains ONLY to the T43, not T41/T42 as they are true PATA chipset machines (and the firmware is a work-around for the T43's SATA interface.
