SeaSonic SS-300SFD 300W SFX12V v3.1 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply

4 out of 5 eggs Great *replacement* PSU 05/04/2014

This review is from: SeaSonic SS-300SFD 300W SFX12V v3.1 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Compact, solid, high quality, very efficient. Fit into a Silverstone SG05 case great.

Cons: Knocked off an egg because this is best as a *replacement* PSU. What arrived was just the PSU. No screws to bolt it to a case. No power cord to connect it to the wall. If you've built a ton of boxes, you have screws/cords to spare.

But, if you're building a very first computer, I recommend a different model that comes with all the parts.

Pros: Solid, high quality, really quiet at low (100W max) usage

Cons: Knocked off an egg because this is best as a *replacement* PSU. What arrived was just the PSU. No screws to bolt it to a case. No power cord to connect it to the wall. If you've built a ton of boxes, you have screws/cords to spare.

GIGABYTE GA-J1800N-D2H Intel Dual-Core Celeron J1800 SoC (2.41 GHz) Mini ITX Motherboard/CPU/VGA Combo
  • Verified Owner
  • Owned For: 1 day to 1 week

Pros: It's small, and dead quiet -- completely fanless. When coupled with a SSD, there's no moving parts. Low power, though I've not measured it. Super-easy setup for a HTPC box -- plug in RAM, a SSD, power supply, and it's ready. 4.9 Windows experience rating, lowest number is the CPU.

Cons: VGA out is the only working video port. I did my initial build, BIOS setup & Win7/64 install with this board connected via VGA to a monitor. But, when I tried to connect this to a Sony KDL40EX501 TV, the TV never saw a signal. Tried multiple HDMI cables, multiple TV inputs. No luck. For a MB that I bought to be part of a HTPC, that's a really important feature to not work.

After installing the USB3 drivers from the website, Win7/64 could not see any USB ports or recognize devices connected to it. Uninstalled those drivers, and the USB ports were usable. Wait a bit, this might get better.

Other Thoughts: Reading the other comments, I went straight to a pair of 4GB SODIMMS at 1.35V, and immediately flashed this MB to the F3 BIOS.

I used a PS/2 keyboard when flashing/tweaking the BIOS to F3. Never had a single problem getting it recognized. If you have such a keyboard still lying around, it's probably the most reliable input method for the BIOS.

COM/LPT ports on MB - nice for some, but I really don't need them nor have I tested them.

The CPU is soldered to the MB, limiting upgrade paths. But, a PCIe x1 slot should allow a GPU to be added down the road to take some work off the CPU. There are x1 -> x16 adapters that really open up the choices of GPU.

Reading the manual, the Mini PCI Express slot is claimed to not support USB Bluetooth signals. Haven't tried any cards in that slot, but it'd be great to get a WiFi + Bluetooth card and save a slot.
