This review is from: TOSHIBA Canvio Basics 3.0 2TB USB 3.0 2.5" External Hard Drive HDTB120XK3CA Black
Pros: A lot of storage in a small package for a great price. Little more than the cost of the equivalent amount of DVD media! This is my new approach to backup - at least for all but the most critical files.
Cons: Newegg requires me to enter a "Con" so I will. It is not the fastest drive. But I did not purchase it for speed. And I am only running USB2.
Other Thoughts: The 3 yr warranty - Toshiba must believe in their product - but would I want to send a drive full of personal, financial, business and other sensitive data to the manufacturer for "repair"? Probably not. So, I formatted the drive as a Truecrypt volume. The data is (reasonably) securely encrypted in case the drive is lost, stolen or in need of service.READ FULL REVIEW
This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 3TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D301TDB Black
Pros: None for the drive. Several for newegg - see other thoughts
Cons: Connected to PC and power supply per instructions. The light blinks and that is about it. Not recognized by PC (tried two PCs - same thing). No sound from the drive - seems not to be spinning. Contacted Samsung/Seagate tech support. They agreed it was dead.
Other Thoughts: I chatted with newegg to find out if there was a restocking charge if I wanted to return for a refund instead of an exchange as the web site was not totally clear on that point. Good news - no restocking fee. The rep offered to prepare the RMA and I accepted the offer. Best of all the rep sent me a UPS call tag so I am not out the shipping cost!!! Thanks newegg. Most if not all of the dozen drives I have in use were purchased from newegg. And so will the next dozen :-)READ FULL REVIEW
This review is from: TOSHIBA Canvio Basics 3.0 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable Hard Drive HDTB110XK3BA Black
Pros: No separate power adapter required.
Good cost per GB
Cons: Not the fastest but they are connected to USB 2 ports.
Other Thoughts: I purchased one a while back strictly for off computer backup. Worked fine. I was considering purchasing a second one for some additional storage rather than replacing the internal hard drive. I read a review on 3/9/13 which indicated problems with the sleep function of the drive and Linux. I tested my drive on my CentOS 6 desktop and Ubuntu 12.04 netbook. NO problems. The drive will sleep after its timeout or on a suspend. It wakes when I attempt to access it. No errors.
I purchased a second drive and have had it connected to my CentOS 6 desktop for several days. It has gone into sleep mode under a number of scenarios and has woken with no errors.
