Budget Gaming CPU

AMD Athlon II X3 450 - Athlon II X3 Rana Triple-Core 3.2 GHz Socket AM3 95W Desktop Processor - ADX450WFGMBOX
AMD Athlon II X3 450 - Athlon II X3 Rana Triple-Core 3.2 GHz Socket AM3 95W Desktop Processor - ADX450WFGMBOX

Pros: I put together a budget gaming PC about a year ago, and this was the processor I picked after *hours* of consideration. I believe I picked the right one. I use my PC for virtualization, AAA games, and your usual internet browsing. The 4th core was stable for me (yay!) but even with the added 30w, it still runs cool with the stock fan (speccy shows it hovering around 30° C for SC2, FarCry 3, and Civ5. It maxed out at 50° C during my initial stability/stress test). That *is* something to note, though: if you unlock the 4th core, the power draw goes up to 125w, so you want to make sure your mobo/psu can handle that. As long as I keep the fan and heat sink clean, though, this little thing will handle just about everything you can throw at it without breaking a sweat. For the price, this is simply the best product on the market, period.

Cons: No L3 cache, won't raise my children if I should expire prematurely.

Overall Review: I should note, I can't speak to the processor's overclocking ability. The mobo I picked up has a shaky reputation and wasn't designed with OC in mind, so I couldn't tell you how far you can push this baby, unlocked or no. My build: -BIOSTAR A880GZ AM3+ AMD 880G -AMD Athlon II X3 450 Rana 3.2GHz -MSI Radeon HD 7770 1GB 128-bit -G.SKILL Value Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) -Antec VP-450 450W ATX 12V v2.3 -Rosewill RANGER-M Dual Fans MicroATX Mini Tower

Studying Abroad

Acer Aspire One AOD270-1410 Espresso Black Intel Atom N2600(1.60 GHz) 10.1" WSVGA 1GB Memory 320GB HDD Netbook

Pros: I got this little thing back in March to serve as my going abroad computer while I study in Germany. So far it has treated me very well and has kept on chugging through the last nine months. I mostly use it for writing e-mails, social networking, and the occasional paper when required, and the software that came with the netbook is more than adequate for all of those things. Due to financial constraints at the time of purchase, I couldn't upgrade the HDD or the RAM, so I've been stuck with the stock features. All things told I'm very satisfied, although if I'd had the spare cash I would have gone for the upgrade in a heartbeat. For the price I got it at, it has been very handy. When I get home, it will serve as my at school/paper writing machine (after a little upgrade)

Cons: No eggs off for any of these because I knew about these before buying, but cons nonetheless: -When unupgraded, sluggish. Even for MSWord and Firefox, 1gb of RAM is barely enough. -The Atom processor is energy efficient, but lacks punch. -Small display resolution makes it less than ideal for movies or even older games.

Overall Review: I know the instant I publish this review the little thing is gonna die on me, but here's hoping that isn't the case. I tried playing Civ III: Gold edition today (a game that had its last patch 2004) booted from a thumb drive and for some reason I can't get it to run. My primary theory is that the monitor resolution isn't compatible with the game, or that the integrated graphics just can't hack it. Oh well. I didn't exactly buy this thing for the gaming prospects.
