Tripp Lite SRCOOL12K 120V, Self-Contained Portable Air Conditioning Unit
  • Owned For: 1 day to 1 week

Pros: Nice cold air, portable on wheels. 12K BTU.

Big plus is being able to vent the hot air out of the room.

It automatically turns itself back on once power is restored (in the event of a power outage).

Cons: May have to clean the filters regularly(Tripp Lite recommends every 2 weeks), but hopefully the filters don't get dirty that quickly.

Other Thoughts: Pretty good purchase to cool down a server room. Competitive price. No issues with it so far.

Western Digital WD Green WD10EADS 1TB 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5
  • Verified Owner
  • Owned For: 1 day to 1 week

Pros: A lot of storage for cheap. 2/2 that I ordered are working thus far.

Cons: Nothing against the drive, but 2TB will probably be this price before long the way storage goes.

Other Thoughts: I bought two of these from newegg and they have slightly different full model numbers....I don't think it really matters, because they work together fine in RAID 1.

Synology DS209 Diskless System Disk Station 2-bay SATA NAS Server for Workgroups and Offices
  • Verified Owner
  • Owned For: 1 day to 1 week

Pros: Fast, great interface to use, LOTS of features. Synology is good about continuing to develop their product through firmware updates. I paired mine with 2 1TB WD EADS green drives RAID 1; has been taking my data in stride. They can go to at least 2TB at this point in time and probably more down the road, so I only have to buy new larger drives in the future.

Those with gigabit or wireless N will experience even faster speeds as 100 Mbit/wireless G is just too slow for this thing.

Cons: It's not the cheapest buy, however you're not just buying superior hardware, you are getting the development and features as well. It's the best bang for your buck in the long term in my opinion.

Other Thoughts: I've set mine up for remote access/management for myself and family. You just have to register a free DNS name (I used DynDNS) and then voila, you and others can get to the files provided you can allow port 5000 through firewall, and do a little port forwarding/DMZ configuration. Not too difficult, just make sure you have a newer router that has that capability.

Also, don't make my mistake when hooking the hard drives into the Synology motherboard. Make sure you plug the "L" shaped head of the included SATA cable into the hard drive and not the motherboard. It can be a little tricky plugging them in, then pulling them out again.
