Quiet, great for NZXT and top-venting cases

NZXT RC-RST40-01 120mm Sleeve Direct Touch 4 Heat Pipe CPU Cooler
NZXT RC-RST40-01 120mm Sleeve Direct Touch 4 Heat Pipe CPU Cooler

Pros: Quiet, 120mm fan, option to mount a second 120mm, easy install.

Cons: Fan orientation may be a problem for some cases (see thoughts)

Overall Review: This seems well designed for NZXT cases; other cases may be problematic. The fins and fan(s) orient vertically; heat can be exhausted upwards or downwards, rather than front-to-back or back-to-front. This is great if your case has the appropriate venting (which most NZXT cases do), but I imagine it could be less than ideal for other cases.

Dead on arrival

Sony Optiarc Black 2X BD-ROM 8X DVD-ROM 24X CD-ROM SATA Internal 2X BD-ROM Model BR-5100S
Sony Optiarc Black 2X BD-ROM 8X DVD-ROM 24X CD-ROM SATA Internal 2X BD-ROM Model BR-5100S

Pros: Well, it's SATA, and they don't make a big showy splash about putting their name all over the front bezel.

Cons: Doesn't actually work. BIOS on several systems refuses to acknowledge it. Only time I ever got it to work was when I put it into a system with another DVD drive -- and then Windows 'lost' the other drive.

Overall Review: No software, no frills, not ugly, low price. Would have been wonderful had it actually worked.

Nice looking, possibly flawed [Updated] No flaws, see below.

NZXT Source 210 S210-002 White w/Black Front Trim “Aluminum Brush / Plastic” ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
NZXT Source 210 S210-002 White w/Black Front Trim “Aluminum Brush / Plastic” ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Well, if you like the aesthetics, they're great. It's low cost, but not no frills. Lots of fan mount points, bottom-mounted PSU. I previously built a system using the black model for my wife, and decided to pick this one up for myself based on how much we liked the other model.

Cons: I don't know if it's just my unit or a manufacturing process issue, but the top row of mount points for the motherboard were misaligned by a few millimeters -- enough that I couldn't use the row. It didn't affect the use of the case, but you may want to take this into consideration if you plan on using a particularly large or heavy CPU heatsink. *** Update -- it was partly the motherboard, partly shipping (I think). I don't know why I didn't think to check this before, but it was the Asus board I'd been using in this case was actually what was misaligned! Didn't find out until it died and I replaced it with another brand. I also noticed that it was slightly off-balance compared to the black case version I own; I just warped it back into shape by hand.

Overall Review: For the money, you can't go wrong -- though you may have to undo the damage UPS does if they drop it.

Great ITX case, some limitations

IN WIN BQS656.DD120BL Black Steel / Plastic Mini-ITX Desktop Computer Case 120W External Adaptor Power Supply
IN WIN BQS656.DD120BL Black Steel / Plastic Mini-ITX Desktop Computer Case 120W External Adaptor Power Supply

Pros: Compact, quiet, external power brick (may be a con for some). Uses laptop style slim cd/dvd bay (may also be a con for others).

Cons: Depending on the positioning of the CPU socket on the motherboard, you may need to use something other than the stock heatsink. I've had issues with some boards because of this -- not a big deal, but something to watch out for. Also, only has one 2.5" HDD bay. I ended up using a slim cd -> hdd converter to get around this, but for the price I wish in win included something like that already.

Overall Review: I like these models enough to have bought four for different uses (one for soho router w/ GA-C1007UN-D dual nic board), two misc linux toys, and a dedicated linux workstation for my parents. I was very happy to see newegg restocked them!

Pretty much the only heatsink paste I use

Arctic Silver 5 High-Density Polysynthetic Silver Thermal Compound AS5-3.5G
Arctic Silver 5 High-Density Polysynthetic Silver Thermal Compound AS5-3.5G

Pros: Low cost, high quality thermal transfer. I've used it on everything from Athlon XPs to Core 2-upgraded Mac Minis and it's never failed me. It's got almost 6000 positive reviews here, numerous analyses proving it's the best; do you really need more?

Cons: Still waiting for other flavors.

the little case that could

LIAN LI PC-Q07 Black Aluminum Mini-ITX Tower Computer Case
LIAN LI PC-Q07 Black Aluminum Mini-ITX Tower Computer Case

Pros: Attractive finish. Minimalist design. PCI slot available. Able to use a standard ATX power supply of any make. I own a bunch of these, in a few different colors (which newegg no longer stocks, sadly); they're great eye-catchers and serve as wonderful little linux boxxen.

Cons: Not enough screws. No spare panel screws (and you'll eventually loose one, count on it). Can be easy to scratch if you're not careful during assembly (but seems robust enough in day to day use).

Overall Review: Not for someone who expects to open it regularly, I should think -- it's six screws on each side to get into it, and one of the sides mounts the motherboard. Some people hate this; I don't have a problem with it -- just know what you're getting into when you buy it.
