Canon imageCLASS LBP6670dn Monochrome Laser Printer

5 out of 5 eggs Dependable and Quick 10/14/2014

This review is from: Canon imageCLASS LBP6670dn Monochrome Laser Printer

Pros: I was looking at some smaller laser printers to bring with me to college, but they all lacked duplex printing, and in my opinion I am more likely to save money because everything prints double sided, than a slightly cheaper toner cartridge. The combo deal with the free additional toner cartridge is what got me to buy this printer, so far I have gotten through about a half of a ream of paper and the toner level indicator hasn't moved a pixel yet, and that's on the starter cartridge. I do not see myself needing to buy more toner until the end of next year at the earliest.
I did choose to familiarize myself with the printer before I left, and there are some quirks, but for the most part, downloading the driver off of Cannon's website is all you need to do, and if connecting over usb, window's 8.1 is able to find a driver to get you printing right away.

Networking this printer was straightforward in my opinion, when I arrived (with drivers already installed and working) I plugged the ethernet cord into the back of the printer(a gigabit enabled connection by the way) I did a normal add printer through windows, it took a second try but the printer appeared, and I was able to print within 10 minutes of plugging it in.

Print quality is what you would expect from a monochrome laser printer, and in my opinion graphics are shaded quite well. I have it set to print at 1200x1200 instead of the default 600x600, but I did a side by side comparison and couldn't tell the difference anyway. It prints really quickly, about a page every second in one sided mode and maybe 3 seconds for double sided. I can(and have) depended on this printer to get a hard copy of an essay printed out minutes before I have to leave for class in the morning.

The best "feature" of this printer is probably its dependability, It is my first laser printer, and I know that dependability is laser's thing but it still blows me away, at no point do I have that feeling of "please let it print" that inkjets have riddled me with over the years. I have gotten one, paper jam, and that was when I put 3x5's in the wrong direction, but the printer noticed immediately, and told me how to retrieve it via the lcd screen, with images of what doors needed to be opened. It was crazy easy, to the point where a paper jam isn't a scary thing like on an inkjet.

I personally like the color scheme, it goes with my white desktop, and doesn't have any shiny black plastic to collect fingerprints and dust.

Cons: There are a handful of issues with this printer however, and the one that got me to come write this review, is the not so user friendly paper selection, when I print using the front tray(3x5's, nice paper, etc) you can select the paper size on your computer, but once it is sent to the printer, it prompts you on the little screen to "select index" which I thought I had done. Turned out that I had to go into the menu system of the printer and change the paper type for the front tray manually, and then it printed fine. I found it odd that it knew what it had to be set to, but was not capable of making the change itself.

Could use cell phone compatibility, but with Google cloud print set up on my desktop I can print from my laptop and phone with ease, as long as its not turned off.

The only other issues with the printer are its weight/size and that it is considerably noisy, granted it is quick so the noise isn't for long but it could easily wake somebody up. It does have a quiet setting, but I did not find it was that much quieter(only avoided the loud clacks), it just took longer. About its weight, I can say this weighs about as much as my full tower custom desktop, you don't want to carry it up stairs if you don't have to, but the handles do make it hold able. As for size, it did take some re-configuring to make a place for it in a dorm room, but after assembly of an ikea shelf it had a place to sit.

Other Thoughts: Definitely more than an average person needs in their home, but for printing off 5-10 syllabi as well as reading assignments, 5-10 page papers etc. on a regular basis, it just makes things easier.

I do want to say that not everyone's college may allow networked printers, and technically my school recommends against it because anyone in my building could connect to it if they really wanted to.

I can't list this as a con, because it is avoidable, but when the energy saving mode is on, the printer will not receive a print job 70%of the time, this can be avoided by changing what level of "sleep" the printer goes into, or by pressing the power button to awaken it, which only takes a second. I sit right next to the printer so this is easy, but in a networked situation such as a home or office, this could be more of an issue, but seeing as it wouldn't be next to somebody's ear as they sleep, it doesn't matter if it makes noises while it stays warmed up.

Galaxy 77NPH6DT8KXZ G-SYNC Support GeForce GTX 770 HOF 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 SLI Support Video Card

Pros: The color is great, Its faster than any other 770, and it keeps cool.

Cons: The only con with the card is that it wasn't a 4gb card, but it is unlikely that I will be using any programs, or playing any games that would be inefficient enough to need that much ram.

Other Thoughts: This card is great, I have a white and black theme for my pc, and was going to buy the card without any further research. But after looking into it, and seeing the quality that the card is built with, from capacitors to the white pcb, I was amazed, and the icing on the cake was the incredible clock speeds the card was overclocked to out of the box. I have run folding on the card for hours and the temps never seem to go above mid 70's, and that's with the fans around 65%. I have had no problems with the card overall, only driver issues, which would affect the entire product line, no matter the manufacturer. Lastly I was contacted directly by Galaxy to let me know that there was a firmware update available for the card, something I probably would have missed for weeks. The warranty that is on the card is also great, as long as you register, so I feel the extra cost of this card over other 770's is more than worth it, even for the color alone.
