Pros: -These are excellent drives, fast and 64MB cache and hopefully a long life ahead of them
-Bought them on sale for a bennie each, really good deal.
Cons: -Ordered four, one of them arrived either dead or dying as the raid 5 array wouldn't build with the drive in slot 2 (HP ML 110 G7). HP Insight Diags immediately failed with sequential read errors. Since I had to deliver the system asap, I built Windows on only three drives and afterwords replaced with another RE4 1TB. The P212/256 rebuilt the array like a champ and smooth sailing from there.
Other Thoughts: -Failed drives happen, so I'm only docking 1 egg, but I question WD's quality control. I read in another review (from WD's response) that each drive gets testing and goes through a QA process. Right. You might need to QA your QA, WD...
-Newegg? You guys rock as always.
Pros: -Shipped fast - see other thoughts
-Indeed no hard drive trays included, but I bought off-lease genuine HP ones from a popular auction site for $10 a piece. The lights work on them which is a must IMO.
-Accepted an add-on p212/256 controller no sweat in slot 2; the included SAS cable from the onboard RAID to the cage is a bit of a stretch length wise, but it worked out fine.
Cons: -Thanks to everyone's input here, planned and executed well, no real cons.
-Yes, the onboard RAID is rather light duty, but the server that this guy is replacing ran software RAID 1 for three years, and saved their rear when one of the disks failed. Don't knock software RAID too much, it does the job when appropriate.
Other Thoughts: -Installed WS 2012 Standard on the box - all drivers work fine but you cannot use the included SmartStart CD with it. I installed manually.
-Shipped fast - like way fast - like way too fast. Three day business shipping turned out to be next-day. Usually this was great but we were out of town and I was counting on the timing. LaserShip left the box out in the rain until luckily my neighbor threw in his garage. Almost TOO efficient Newegg, but thanks for the quick shipping as always.
Pros: Excellent quality and value for the price. For $35 I turned an extra 160GB 1.8 drive into a reliable external HDD. The kit came with pads for a 5mm drive and fits an 8mm drive snugly without the pads. It also came with a sheath (similar to a blackberry case) that the drive slips into - very nice.
Cons: None. Even the blue drive activity light isn't ridiculously bright.
Other Thoughts: A 1.8" Toshiba SATA HDD fit perfectly in this unit. Win7 recognized it immediately as a hard drive (not removable storage) and has been working flawlessly for the hour or so it's been running.READ FULL REVIEW
