3 out of 5 eggs Even harder to set up than other reviews said 05/21/2011

This review is from: StarTech SAT3520U2ER Aluminum 3.5" Silver eSATA USB Dual SATA External RAID Hard Drive Enclosure

Pros: This unit is cheap, and appears to work once I FINALLY got it set up (documentation is nightmare, see Cons).

Cons: I had even more trouble than I expected, having already read the other reviews here that indicate mis-labeled DIP switch and wrong documentation. My own setup experience:

I wanted this set up as RAID1.

1. Downloaded the StarTech manual from their site, and sure enough it didn't match the shipped manual. Followed the online manual, as suggested here.

2. Also confirmed my DIP switches 1 through 4 were labeled backwards, as others reported.

3. Given that, I set the DIP switches for RAID1 and did what the manual says: "press the Reset Button to save changes". I went through this three times. In every case, the unit came up with JBOD policy, not RAID1. Web search turned up the suggestion that I needed to "hold the Reset button for a few seconds." Tried that repeatedly, still stuck at JBOD. So then I took off the cover and pressed the Reset button (briefly) WITH THE UNIT POWERED ON. Previous tries had been powereed off (manual never said power on). Immediately got

Other Thoughts: Another annoyance: The StarTech manual doesn't tell you that there's a password (default is 'admin') on the 57xx SteelVine Manager GUI. I had to download the manual from the RAID chipset manufacturer (Silicon Image, Inc.) to find that out.;
