5 out of 5 eggs In response to "Great drive but what's up with RAID?" 12/15/2012

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Series MZ-7TD250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Samsung has released an updated firmware update today. Everything seems to be normal now. Cannot edit the other review I posted. Good job Samsung, sucks it you didn't update the firmware earlier.

Cons: None at the moment.

1 out of 5 eggs Great drive but what's up with RAID? 12/14/2012

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Series MZ-7TD250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Speed and price.

Cons: Does not get recognized by RAID controller if you only have a single drive. I'm not sure if it's motherboard's buggy BIOS(ASUS M5A99FX). I am running a raid 1(mirror) on two 1.5tb hard drives, and the only way for the drive to work is to set the controller to IDE which will destroy mirror functionality. I have searched and finally found something on Samsung website:

Click - Manuals & Downloads, click - Magician Software and look under number 5. Notes:

Samsung notes that: "SSD will not be recognized if it is part of a RAID array" If I knew that before I bought it, I definitely wouldn't go with this ssd.

The only workaround I found to get it working is to set some ports to IDE in your raid controller(if possible), but there is still something goofy and windows boot-loader does not load every time. I get "Disk Error, press ALT+CTRL+DEL" message and after resetting the computer a few times it finally boots.

Other Thoughts: Mobo: ASUS M5A99FX.

MSI Z77A-GD65 LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

Pros: Looking at specs and price board seems solid.

Cons: Unfortunately RAID 1 is a big fail with two 1TB (6gb) Western Digital Black drives. After installing windows and latest drivers everything works, until maybe 2 reboots. Boot is stuck at "Starting Windows". If I switch back to IDE in bios settings it boots up again. I have tested the drivers in another rig and they both work fine. Looking at other people's review they got the Raid working correctly with no problems. Maybe I just have a lemon. I have tried all raid drivers I could find the Inter Controller, all with the same outcome. If you are planning Raid configuration I would recommend you avoid this motherboard.
