Western Digital RE4 WD2003FYYS 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5
  • Verified Owner
  • neweggOwned For: 1 week to 1 month

Pros: High-MTBF and better burn-in for more confidence about reliability. Five-year warranty.

Cons: Shipping quality is poor from NewEgg NJ. Drive arrived within a ESD-safe bag, wrapped in a half-inch of bubble wrap, in the white OEM box, at the exact bottom of a NewEgg cardboard box and then covered by paper filler. Whereas a suspension system isn't necessary, putting the drive in the center would absorb a lot more of the impact. Perhaps they intend to pass any damaged drives onto Western Digital - surprised WD hasn't complained or changed their process, their cost of replacing the drive from a latent failure must be accounted for in the sales price.

WD's free Data LifeGuard Diagnostic showed no initial damage after two days' worth of several runs.

Other Thoughts: Bytes Per Physical Sector: 512 (non-AF) - no alignment needed for any older O/S. HDTune 70-145MBps transfer rate, 9.6ms avg access rate [2-17ms]

WD RE3 WD1002FBYS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5
  • Verified Owner
  • neweggOwned For: more than 1 year

Pros: Runs fine in RAID1 with another WD1002FBYS purchased earlier. So far, one year in RAID1 configuration on Gigabyte motherboard with Windows 7 NTFS, in the past few months moved array into Synology DS212j+ NAS (ext3 on Busybox Linux) in RAID1 24/7.

Cons: WD's warranty leaves a lot to be desired.

Other Thoughts: NAS uses 20.5W whether idle spinning or copying data (~60MB/s on gigabit).

SAMSUNG SpinPoint P Series SP2504C 250GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5
  • Verified Owner
  • neweggOwned For: 1 month to 1 year

Pros: - High sequential read speed in first 40GB, good for multiple partitions
- Inaudiable seeks at 2ft on desk in Sonata II (120mm fan speed low), stock CPU fan w/ Q-Fan enabled, and fanless 7600GS.

Cons: - Mediocre random-access seek speed expected of 7,200 RPM drive; Raptor obviously outperforms...

Other Thoughts: Raw data: 232.8GB (250,059,161,600 bytes)
Writing to the full disk took: 10320 seconds. Speed: 22-23.1MB/s

Samsung SP2504C VT100-33
Raw size: 232.8GB (250,059,161,600 bytes, where 1GB = 2^30)
CPU Utilization: 6-10% (3000+ AMD64 on A8N-SLI)
Seq. read: Average of 60.8MB/s; Linear decreasing slope from {70-73MB/s in 0-40GB range; 39-45MB/s in 210-250GB range}
Burst speed: 180.3MB/s (Sil 3114 on A8N-SLI Premium)
Random access speed: 18.3 ms
