Sony STR-DH520 7.1 Channel 3D AV Receiver

4 out of 5 eggs Good Receiver for the $$$ 12/02/2013

This review is from: Sony STR-DH520 7.1 Channel 3D AV Receiver

Pros: 7.1 Receiver with lots of HDMI inputs
Nameable inputs
Standby HDMI passthrough (for last source)
Price (biggest Pro really)
Looks decent and blends into an HT setup nicely

Cons: Some of the higher end receiver features are missing. No on screen setup menus here. No Audio input reassignment to other video sources. No Audyssey or other mic'd auto setup. Very basic EQ settings and speaker settings.

Other Thoughts: Bought this for a guest room and at the refurbished price it was a no brainer. This is a no frills 7.1 receiver. Would I ever use this as a dedicated home theater receiver... no. But it works great as my HDMI switcher and amp for our guest room HTPC setup. Puts out enough power to satisfy most speakers and would be a great entry level receiver for a dorm, 1st apartment, or guest room. I would recommend it.

Pros: Corsair... works perfectly. Always does for me.

Cons: None... it's RAM that works the way it's supposed to.

Other Thoughts: Will continue to use Corsair as when using other brands some can cause system instability when mixing sizes. Mostly a problem with the cheap off brand stuff... but Corsair hasn't let me down yet.

GIGABYTE GA-E7AUM-DS2H LGA 775 NVIDIA GeForce 9400 HDMI Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Worked right out the box. HDMI worked flawlessly, though did have to disable the realtek audio in favor of the Nvidia. After that HDMI audio was perfect. Compact size and the GPU is perfect for HTPC duty. The price is spot on as well for HDMI, full digital audio, and built in GPU that can handle any 1080p playback you throw at it.

Cons: GPU/NB get's hot. It's within specs but it gets hotter than I am comfortable with. I bought some Arctic Silver and put a fan on top of their heatsink and now I am much happier. As others noted, the SATA connectors are in a stupid position on the board. If you are a gamer you WILL need a stand alone card, though this does Hybrid SLI so it should be even better. I am going to try this feature out after I buy a new vid card.

Other Thoughts: Other than the minor gripes the board has performed flawlessly. The GPU isn't meant for 3D gaming... it says on the box 3DMark06 score of 2400+. I have it in the living room in my HTPC and it has been rock solid since I bought it so far. On 24/7. Would definitely buy again as the price is definitely right.
