A lot of features in a small format
Pros: - Great software : DSM (DiskStation Manager) - Quiet - 2 LAN Ports for Link Aggregation
Cons: - According to Synology, only one RAM slot is avaiblage for expansion. In fact, the original RAM module can be changed too, for up to 16 GB of RAM.
Overall Review: Where to begin ? I wanted a NAS to use as a centralized storage for my movie collection. I'm using Kodi to play all my files and I wanted a centralized database too. I also wanted to be able to access the files stored on my NAS remotely. Enter the DS718+. I installed two 10 TB WD Red hard drives and configured the unit as a SHR (Synology Hybrid Raid) storage with one disk redundancy for my movies and personnal files. For the database, I'm using Docker to have the latest MariaDB and phpMyAdmin version. That was fairly easy to setup. For the remote access to my files, I'm mainly using the Synology provided VPN Server package. I can access the shared folders on my NAS, my desktop computer or any network connected devices (router, modem, Raspberry Pi, etc) at home with this solution. Next step is upgrading the RAM!
Good hard drive for storage
Pros: - Quiet - Reliable (so far) - A ton of space !
Cons: - None
Overall Review: I bought two of these hard drives to put in my NAS, in RAID1. They run 24/7 and are surprisingly quiet. I hesitated between the Seagate Ironwolf (for the price) or the Western Digital Red (for the reliability) and I must say that for the moment, I do not regret my purchase !
Really fast!
Pros: Amazingly fast, worked without any problem.
Cons: None
Overall Review: It replaced the sluggish 5400 RPM 1 TB drive that was installed in my Mac mini Late 2012. It was immediately recognized by Drive Utility and formatted without issues. Did a clean install of OS X El Capitan, maxed out the RAM to 16 GB and now my computer boot up in 12 seconds.
Perfect for my Mac mini Late 2012
Pros: Installed easily in my Mac mini Late 2012, it replaced the original 8 GB. Everything is working fine.
Cons: None
