MSI GE Series GE70 Apache Pro-012 Gaming Laptop 4th Generation Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40 GHz) 12 GB Memory 1 TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2 GB 17.3
  • Verified Owner
  • Owned For: 1 month to 1 year

Pros: Fast PC
Fast Graphics
Ability to Easily add 2 SSDs (mSATA)
Great Keyboard

Cons: Design Flaw with Power Config
Wif Fi Drops Out with Heavy GPU Use (Power Issue)
Runs REALLY Hot. I mean burn your leg hot.
HD is in 2 partitions as shipped (Hate that)
The machine does not have enough power to run with the current components as configured.

Other Thoughts: I originally gave this a 4 star review afer a couple weeks of ownership but reported issue with Wif Fi Dropping out. When I say dropping out, I mean losing connection over and over. Yesterday during a 2 hour play session, I lost connection more than a dozen times. I am writing this today on my old Acer notebook and have not had anything other than 5 bars for the last 3 hours; same network and same chair in front of the TV....

I have tried everything to remedy this..

I am finally convinced the problem is power-related. When the GPU is at high use, the wif fi drops out. Turning off bluetooth helps as does throttling the wi-fi connection. MSI support has been non-existent and there are many posts on the topic. If I am right, the problem isn't fixable. If you plan to play with an Ethernet cable, you'll never have an issue. You won't have a problem just using Intel HD Graphics either. If you actually want to use the note book to play high quality games in a wif fi setting, you are going to be very upset. Strongly recommend you look elsewhere. I wish I had. Based on how the company has addressed this, it will be my first and last MSI product,

Pros: Fast
Great Graphics Performance - WOW 860M is beast!
Supports mSATA drives
Love the keyboard
Turbo fan switch is awesome

Cons: Interesting configuration choices
Software/Windows needs tweaks out of the box
Can get warm with a full gaming load
Touchpad sticks but who games with a touchpad?

Other Thoughts: Overall happy with this machine but had some annoying issues out of the box. First, you'll want to go into the hardware settings for the wi-fi adapter and make sure it isn't set to "sleep" This will solve the machine dropping the Internet frequently.. Learned this by trial and error. Secondly, update to the Latest Intel Bluetooth/Wireless drivers. This will solve frequent issues with a Bluetooth Mouse. I'm knocking off an egg, as these 2 items would have saved me a couple hours of messing around diagnosing problems; problems that would not have existed if the latest drivers were installed (4/22/14) and the machine configured properly.

SAMSUNG 840 EVO mSATA 250GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-MTE250BW

Pros: Easy to Install
Solid Performance

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I got this for my new notebook that has 2 mSATA ports. I plugged it in, went to the disk untility in Win 8.1 and Poof; a fast 250 MB drive. I'm actually not booting from it but chose to install my most frequently used games instead.
