Cons: Doesn't work. Roku app is buggy. Weak tuner. No coax passthrough. Broken guide. Website goes down often.
Other Thoughts: I've been trying to hold off on my review of the Simple.tv gen 2 box, hoping that, like the original, it would improve over time. Sadly, this is not the case. Right off the bat, the 2nd gen box takes steps backwards from the first. It's tuner is weaker than the originals, pulling in fewer channels with the exact same antenna. It also lacks the coaxial passthrough of the first unit, which was a great feature.
The 2nd gen box also is plagued with new issues of its own. It ignores the start recording early, end late settings. The guide regularly misses new episodes. Tonight, it began recording two episodes set to record 5 minutes early, and ended them 15 minutes early. Meaning my half hour shows had 20 minute run times, only 15 minutes of which were the program, and the last 15 minutes were completely gone. This would be forgivable if it happened rarely, but unfortunately, it's more common than a successful recording.
The Roku app is still a bit of a mess. Every improvement they make seems to introduce more bugs. After nearly of year of owning a gen 1 and now a gen 2 box, the Roku app still cannot pause or rewind live tv without causing the video to hang.
In addition, simple.tvs web server (which you need to schedule recordings or even watch previously recorded ones) seems to become less reliable every week. Last Friday, it was down for hours. They recently changed the URL used for accessing your simple.tv, but didn't forward correctly from the old one, so the only way I found out was simple.tvs own forums (full of users with problems they ignore).
I'm sad I tried to give this box a shot and hope for improvements. Now I've had it for two months, and my 30 day return period is up, but it's still unusable. Between this device and my lifetime service, I'm out $350 bucks. There are more alternatives every day, the Channel Master DVR + and Tablo for example. Both seem to be getting better word of mouth and support, so I strongly suggest prospective buyers explore other options.
For now, I'm stuck with my Simple.tv, so I'll cross my fingers and hope it improves, but I want to strongly suggest new buyers be very cautious. It seems like recent reviews have been good, and I can only assume they haven't used the box for long, as it's first impressions are good, and it promises a lot, unfortunately, it delivers on none of its promises.
Update: I forgot to mention how the last "update" the the roku app now causes the roku to reboot at least 3 times every half hour. Yet another swing and a miss by the folks at simple.tv.
