This review is from: AMD Phenom II X4 920 Quad-Core 2.8GHz Socket AM2+ 125W Processor HDX920XCGIBOX
Pros: Runs cool surprisingly , considering its a 45nm on soi and You just have to wonder how they managed the SIO deposition layer/s. I expected leakage and warmer than normal temps but its doing as well or better than the 9600 I had and the 4200 x2 I had. from what I have heard leakage becomes an issue in higher oc's and I havent really been an oc freak aside from just playing around at it. I like longevity in my chips.
i am happy with the purchase and happy that AMD has figured out some quick fixes to come back into the competition. Really this is an impressive chip considering its just a heavilly reworked K8 Amd seems to have a decent scalable architecture to this point, barring the last few gens of updates to the k8.
Granted its likely due to the added cache that the speed gains are what they are, if not wholly then partially or mostly. But all in all AMD has done very well with this. My photoshop lag is gone I am happy. The 9600 didnt seem to like ps much.
Cons: It wasnt here in nov 08.
Other Thoughts: When they add HKMG and
Next gen ULK I think this chip will really shine against Intel. cross my fingers for this year but they say 09 or 2010 for the next gen materials.
for most people an x2 is more than enough chip, where x4's really shine is in demanding applications and the ability to do more of them at one time, If youre a folder slash gamer slash web fanatic I would reccomend this, as well as workstation users etc. Its a great priced reasonably speedy chip that can be built for alot less than a smurftel setup. Few people Need the Intel advantage , insecure geek boys just love the e_peen it gives them . I could see where 3d and cad designers would need Intel but this chip represents more of a level performance per dollar as a cpu, and the system build costs are much much less.
