ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router, DD-WRT Open Source support, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Extended wireless range is great and unit has 5GHZ support.

Interface is clean, simple, and easy to use.

Cons: 1. Some of my wireless devices will not auto-reconnect once they go out of range.

2. Wired Netflix connection randomly and continuously drops and then immediately followed by no internet access anywhere for a few seconds to a minute or until I reset the router. Internet connection never drops unless I'm streaming Netflix.

I did not have any of these issues with my other router. Tried all the trouble-shooting tips and tricks to no avail with either issue.

Other Thoughts: I bought this Asus RT-N66U to replace a still fully functional Linksys 54gs because I wanted extended wireless range and 5ghz support for some new wireless devices. The extended wireless range is awesome and the 5ghz wireless connections work great, not quite as much range as 2.4ghz radio but that is supposed to be normal I guess.

One problem is that two of my wireless devices will not automatically reconnect to the router once they have gone out of range, whether on 2.4ghz, 5ghz, or both. I have to manually reconnect them via the devices' UI. I have tried all the trouble-shooting tips I could find including changing channels, wireless security modes, renaming both the wireless ssid's and even disabling the 5ghz radios on the router and devices and just running on 2.4ghz...devices still won't auto-reconnect. Never had this problem with the other Linksys 2.4ghz only router with any of the same devices.

The other big problem is my entire internet now randomly drops when I am streaming a wired Netflix connection. It's not a bandwidth issue as I've got a 30Mbps/5Mbps connection with a docsis 3 modem all on a gigabit LAN. With the ASUS, this drop now happens constantly with both my PS3 and also when I tried it using my sony dvd player (no gaming or other internet usage going on at the time). When this happens, the internet to everything else either drops out completely or lags badly. It will usually continue until I reset the router or sometimes it comes back on it's own after a few minutes. Makes it hard to watch a movie when it keeps stopping every 15 - 20 minutes. Once in a while it doesn't happen but probably 90% of the time it does (not just during peak Netflix hours either). This almost never occurred with my other router on either the PS3 or the DVD player save maybe only a couple times in the past couple years (maybe 2% of the time during peak hours?). Again, I've tried all the trouble-shooting tips including firmware, QOS, DMZ, and even standing on my head while drinking a glass of water. Didn't help.

I've had this ASUS router almost three months and I'm past the RMA period so I can't exchange it. Dang thing sat in a box for over a month before I ever hooked it up - my bad! ASUS never returned my email and I don't have time to fool around with tech support. Since the wireless part of the Asus router works great, I am now using it only as an extended wireless access point and it functions well for that purpose. And get this, since I have it set up as a WAP only, my wireless devices will now all auto-reconnect, but only in WAP mode. Go figure.

So for now it is simply being used as a nice WAP and I am back to the old faithful 54GS for the router only, WHICH, by the way, is working perfectly with Netflix as it did before. I can live with that I guess. However, if I only wanted a WAP I would have bought only a WAP to begin with.

1 out of 5 eggs Worked Great....for three days 02/14/2012

This review is from: ASRock H67M (B3) LGA 1155 Intel H67 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Cheap, lots of useful features.

Cons: Worked fine for three days then just wouldn't post or even say good-morning. Had to switch it out with the previous mobo I was upgrading from for the time being.

Other Thoughts: Took a chance in spite of some bad reviews and it didn't work out. Quality just doesn't seem to be what it used to be...maybe just a bad one...it happens. Newegg rocks though as they issued me a prepaid ups tag to send it back for a refund. I've done dozens of new builds over the years and never had a bad Asrock mobo until now. I am going with a different higher end ASrock board so we'll see if the new-new one can last at least maybe 4 or 5 days.

Seagate Barracuda ST315005N4A1AS-RK 1.5TB 5900 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5

  • Owned For: 1 day to 1 week

Pros: Cheap price and large capacity. Makes a nice paperweight.

Cons: If I wanted a 1.5GB paperweight I would have ordered one. I was planning on using it as a storage drive only but it started the clicks of death within 12 hours of being installed, followed by random blue screens of death and locking up my PC. Ran Seatools and it failed several tests. Took a chance based on other reviews and got burned. Being RMA'd as we speak.

Other Thoughts: I've been building systems for years and always had good luck with seagate drives until now. Took a chance on this drive based on other reviews and got burned with the same problems others have experienced. Newegg was nice enough to waive the restock fee and let me return it for something else. Newegg rocks, as usual, but the problems folks have had with this drive makes me wonder what Seagate is doing.
