16GB of RAM on 2011 MBP? Sign me up
Pros: - Noticeable improvement from 8GB to 16GB of RAM. - No bottleneck, stuttering, or lag. - It handles all my open apps comfortably.
Cons: - None
Overall Review: - Increased the lifespan of my early 2011 MBP 13' - Very happy with my purchase
5yrs and still running strong
Pros: - Reliable - Inexpensive - Bought this back in 2011 and still running strong
Cons: - Not really a con, just wish it was 3.0. Considering I bought this 5yrs ago, USB 3.0 wasn't as mainstream.
Overall Review: - I've accidentally washed it a couple of times, it still worked.
256GB SSD on a MacBook Pro 8,1
Pros: - HUGE improvement from my old 320GB HDD 5400RPM - Close to the advertised speed. Running Blackmagic Disk Speed Test I was getting the following: WRITE: 458 ~ 470 MB/s READ: 518 ~ 520 MB/s - Easy installation - Lightweight and clean design - No issues as of yet. - Made my old MacBook Pro 8,1 (early 2011) feel like brand new. - Worked with my SATA III cable (where my previous stock HDD was). - Although minimal, I do see a difference in my battery life.
Cons: - Why didn't I upgrade to SSD a lot sooner??
Overall Review: I started to consider buying a new MBP for many reasons (retina, lightweight, battery, USB3.0, etc), however I couldn't bring myself to buy one due to other expenses - so in the mean time I decided to upgrade my MBP as a cost effective method. I bought my MBP 13in within the first week of release back in early 2011. It was the baseline stock version, however I upgraded to 8GB memory not long after my purchase - so I have been running 8GB of memory for the past 4yrs. Along with upgrading my MBP with Samsung 850 PRO 256GB SSD, I also upgraded it to 16GB 1333MHz DDR3 RAM from my old 8GB setup, brand Crucial (bought here). MacBook Pro 8,1 (13-inch, Early 2011) CPU: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 Memory: 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 GPU: Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB Downloaded Yosemite, installed my new 16GB RAM, along with my new SSD and booted off a USB flash drive. Installed Yosemite without any issues, and I INSTANTLY felt and saw the difference in speed. I reset my PRAM and SMC as well, due to installing the new hardware. Used Time Machine to restore my previous backup, no issues whatsoever. My Mac feels like a new breath of fresh air. Although I do wish I had a retina display, USB3.0 and the newer features of the current MBP, I'm EXTREMELY happy with my purchase because I could probably get another 2yrs out of this MBP before I buy the newer ones.
