Mediasonic HF2-SU3S2 3.5

5 out of 5 eggs Great JBOD box for old drives 05/07/2014

This review is from: Mediasonic HF2-SU3S2 3.5" Black SATA I/II/III USB3.0 & eSATA 4 Bay External Enclosure

Pros: Allows for the reuse of older drives as a backup unit (WD 3TB 6Mbps Green). eSata transfer rate is very fast at 120MB/S (sustained for 2TB). USB3 transfer is very good at 86MB/S (sustained for 1TB). Front buttons allow switching of interface from eSata to USB3, Fan speed, and Sync (Sleep Mode). Small unobtrusive little box that is very quiet on fan mode 3. Inexpensive for a 4 drive chassis. Comes with USB3 and eSata cable.

Cons: Drive front panel opens at a mere touch. It needs to be redesigned with a key and latch. Not much to dislike.

Other Thoughts: Excellent construction and design (with the exception of the face plate) for the price. The drives were removed from my main PC's 4x3.5" backplane (iStarUSA BPN-DE340SS). This device will act as secondary backup for my NetGear 6x3.5" NAS. Hope it lasts for a couple of years.

Foxconn Brazos AT-5570 AMD A45 (Hudson D1) 1 x 204Pin SO-DIMM AMD Radeon HD 7290 Black Mini / Booksize Barebone System

  • Owned For: 1 month to 1 year

Pros: Got it cheap during December sale. Quiet and fanless so its perfect for HTPC. Works great with OpenELEC. It can handle 1080p MKV files without stuttering or dropping frames. Small and unobtrusive. Supports 2.5" internal drive and built-in wireless.

Fully supported under Win7/8 with required drivers but would not recommend for anything other than basic tasks.

Cons: Slow CPU (Dual Core 1Ghz), only supports 1x204 Dimm, can get hot without proper ventilation.

Cannot perform CPU intensive tasks such as gaming or watching 1080p movies under Win7/8.

Other Thoughts: Outfitted with 64GB SSD, 4GB Ram, and Foxconn Wireless Receiver. Current deal includes SSD and Wireless Receiver so the final cost is the same as the December deal.

This hardware is ideal for any Linux distribution. It works great for browsing the internet and other basic tasks.

SonicWALL 01-SSC-9289 SonicPoint-N Dual-Radio Wireless AP with PoE Injector
  • Owned For: 1 day to 1 week

Pros: Setup AP in 5min. Strong integration with Sonicwall OS - Security Services, Separate Zones, Manage 16 APs, Unified Management, many options, etc. Good distance and strong signal. Made for SMB to Enterprise grade networks.

Cons: Requires Sonicwall Security Appliance - not meant to be an independent device. Definitely need Sonicwall networking experience. This is a professional product and not a "DIY" device.

Other Thoughts: Never setup a SonicPoint device before but I am an experienced Sonicwall administrator. Read 2 pages in the included booklet and got it running in 5min. Good device.
