This review is from: ASUS Z87-EXPERT LGA 1150 Intel Z87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
Pros: Feature rich, cutting edge performance coupled with consistently crafted good looks. The attention to detail and the most advanced auxiliary features make this board a top choice no matter your criterion... speed, O/C ability
Cons: The Z87 has received negative reviews from users, pertaining to a variety of issues, however these seem to be "early days" release boards. The Cons tag must lie in too many buggy will not post boards. I am currently on my 5th Z87-Expert mobo since August 2013....but Asus earns my trust, loyalty and respect for the way they have dealt with my issues.
Other Thoughts: There are quite a number of extremely thoughtful and extensive reviews already on this site so I will limit my comments to my peculiar circumstances with this board.
For clarity, my experiences came on the following system:
Zalman GS 1200 case, Zalman 9900 CPU Cooler, Asus Z87 Expert motherboard, 32 G G-Skills DDR3 RAM, Core i-7 4770K CPU @ 4.6 GHz, 3G ATI radeon 7950 video, Total 11 Terabyte hard drive storage (W7,W8 & W8.1 on separate SSD boot drives (W8.1)Samsung 840 Pro 256G, (W8)Crucial M4-CTI128 G, (W7) OCZ Vertex3 128 G), 46" Philips monitor, Logitech wireless keyboard & mouse, Logitech Z series speakers, APC UPS system, all circuits dedicated on GFI; Rosewill RBR1000-M PSU
The first board "bought the farm" in under a month. Early performance was slower than aniticpated. The second board arrived in early September '13 and although it ran reasonably well, I was disappointed. It began to have issues... unexplained freezes, random reboots, BSOD's and it began to slow down. I performed a battery of tests on all the components...Memtest, stress routines and so on... nothing pointed to a culprit other than the board itself,
I contacted Asus support again, provided a document explaining all the testing done and the results.. The next board arrived very quickly and lasted less than a week. Asus cross-shipped the next board and when I installed it, it failed to POST. Throughout my dealings with Asus support I have received nothing but the best in rapport and cooperation. The fact that I have used well over one hundred Asus boards in building systems for myself, family and friends, coupled with the rare instances of a defective product and the immediate and helpful Asus support group that I will continue to use Asus boards in all my projects. Every component in a computer has the potential to fail and cause grief... what happens when you deal with the manufacturer is where the deal is sealed or broken. Asus, in my experience, does not believe in breaking deals or customer confidence in their products. In the end, I gave 4 eggs, solely due to the frequency of the problem. As I run this board through it's paces I will update the status of the Z87 - Expert mobo...
This review is from: ZALMAN CNPS9900MAX-B 135mm Long life bearing CPU Cooler Blue LED
Pros: This was an easy install, providing a terrific look with little effort and delivering top notch cooling power... combined with all the standard fans in my Zalman GS1200 case one could probably insert an ice maker... seriously, temps on the cpu and motherboard are constant and low.
Cons: The large size limits the size of the case... make certain you have sufficient clearance. 2 years of continuous service in a tweaked box proved it's reliability... nothing negative to report
Other Thoughts: The value for your hard earned money is provided by this unit. If you want reliable results, no matter the load, you can't go wrong... and you even get a colour choice, for those want a red light district case...READ FULL REVIEW
This review is from: ZALMAN GS1200 Black Aluminum / Steel / Plastic ATX Full Tower Computer Case
Pros: Style and Design coincide to produce a great case... more than enough real estate to satisfy at least 95% of users.
Attention to detail, excellent cooling, hot swap drives, hard drive docks, ample USB support... the list goes on and on...
Cons: The only reason this case did not earn 5 eggs was the fact that the power button melted and some wires charred . The unit was replaced without any problems through Zalman. I owned a GS1000 (4 yrs) previously and this GS1200 just builds on that foundation. The only caution I would add is this.. if you pack the case, that is if you fill every bay with hard drives and blu-ray/dvd players the case gets heavy fast! DO NOT rely on the carry handles built into the case side panels... eventually they will pull out if you transport your case to your buddies on a regular basis. If you don't plan on moving it frequently you should have no problem.
Other Thoughts: Anyone wishing to own a case that earns affection should consider the GS1200. It has cooling solved through either fans or liquid cooling options. My old GS1000 ran cool with stock fans accompanied by a Zalman cpu cooler (9900) and the GS1200 should make ice cubes to boot!
My experiences with all things Zalman instills total confidence in the brand.
