Intel RAID Twenty-four port Expander Card RES2SV240

5 out of 5 eggs WOW!!! 01/11/2011

This review is from: Intel RAID Twenty-four port Expander Card RES2SV240

Pros: SAS Expansion with 24 Gbits/s per mini sas port! I have this unit working with my LSI Megaraid 9260-8i Raid controller. Attached I have 14 1.5TB Seagate hard drives running 3 raid 5 array. I am able to SUSTAIN transfer rates from one array to the other at over 500MB/ps not megabits !MEGABYTES!

Cons: If you have one please tell me?

Other Thoughts: You have to understand this is a SAS EXPANDER not a raid controller card its just presents the hard drives to the controller and the controller performs the raid functions. I cant wait to add 6 more 1.5TB drives to this unit.

4 out of 5 eggs Its OK??? 01/11/2011

This review is from: SUPERMICRO MBD-C2SBA+-O LGA 775 Intel G33 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Can use for ESXI. It supports older hardware which allowed my to convert a previous desktop into a VMWare ESXI server. At minimal upgrade cost.

Cons: The BIOS is a little bit tough to configure. Not the BIOS in it entirely mostly the boots setting when it comes to configuring boot order. But once your familiar with it, its no problem. I wish it hard Dual gigabit ports.

Other Thoughts: All in all not a bad board. The overclocking that is allows you to configure is somewhat useless. It has pre-determined overages and when I set it to OC my CPU by 15% I get lower clock speed than what the CPU gets natively.

Pros: This is a rock solid Raid card. I am currently using it for 2 raid 5 volumes, each has four 1.5 TB Seagate hard drives (consumer hard drives). Both read and write speeds are in excess of 280MB p/s. I am using 64K stripe on one and 128K on the other. I have thoroughly tested the card to see how it handles drive failures such as: removing drive improperly and then putting back in. You have the ability to set properties like rebuild priorities and so forth. The card can rebuild a 1.5TB hard drive from a raid 5 or 6 in under 5hrs.

Cons: Less than admirable performance when striping across 8 drives (raid 0/00) I tested a few different stripe sizes. It is particularly slow when cache isn't enabled and your copying\reading smaller files.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this card to anyone who need solid performance and is willing to pay for it. I will also recommend buying the backup batter unit (BBU) if you want to enable cache and still have a higher level of security if your system losses power.
