ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router, DD-WRT Open Source support, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab
  • Verified Owner
  • Owned For: more than 1 year

Pros: Fast, dual band, great feature set

Cons: UNRELIABLE! Oh it might appear to run well for a few weeks or a month or two, then you will wonder why everything is so slow. Eventually you will try restarting the router and... yup, that fixed it. Rinse, and repeat, month, after month. Awful.

Not even the Ethernet ports are reliable! Forget wireless or your internet connection, just plug two wired devices into it and before long you can watch consistent 30% packet loss in ping or mtr, then restart this junky router and magically it's cured. Then watch it happen _again_ and _again_, month after month.

It's not a hardware problem if it takes weeks of being online to manifest, and a reboot cures it.

They've updated the firmware a half-dozen times or more since I bought it, but no updates ever fixed these problems. Their QA probably doesn't even test prolonged usage past a day.

Other Thoughts: Although many other consumer-grade wireless routers also have reliability problems, it is no excuse. What is wrong with this industry? Apple gets it right. Cisco gets it right in their professional equipment.

Perhaps its because online reviewers experiment with the device for a few hours and pronounce a high score - meanwhile measuring reliability takes weeks of consistent use. Many users never understand what is happening to them - some blame their computer or ISP for being slow.

Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5

Pros: Functions as advertised

Cons: 3 units out of 4 ordered died within 20 months. This is the worst failure rate I have ever seen in a modern HD, and clearly indicates a serious problem with this model.

Gunmetal Oval 4GB USB Flash Drive Cufflinks

This review is from: Gunmetal Oval 4GB USB Flash Drive Cufflinks

Pros: They are cufflinks, and they are flash drives.

Cons: They're surprisingly big and very heavy, at least to my tastes. Not so much that they can't function as cufflinks, but I believe they're up at the level of "tacky." There's certainly no reason the USB functionality in them should make them so large - there are many examples of beautifully light and tiny USB flash drives here.

I can only assume the creators did this on purpose, and believe the big and heavy look is part of the appeal. I'd say it's a fashion fail.

Way too expensive for what you get. For this kind of money, you should have 32GB on each wrist.
