Excellent Board, with 2 'flaws'

ASUS M4A77TD AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard
ASUS M4A77TD AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: Extremely easy to setup, bios is exceptionally intuitive, and picked up all my memory timings and processor type without any hastle from me. Excellent choice as it has no on-board video to disable or generate heat.

Cons: Only 2 minor flaws I've found with this board: It has only 1 external fan header. Most cases this board will be going into have 2+ fans on them, it would be nice to have an extra 1, if not 2 fan headers on board. This is a very, very minor quibble, I can't stand the placements chosen on most boards for the external connections. Power/reset button, USB, external sound, etc are all along the very bottom of the board. Most would find this appealing, but my case has the PSU down there. They are a true pain to get to. I've seen one motherboard have a 'break out board' for this, and thought it was the best design possible, as it provides much easier access.

Pros: Huge drive, very fast. Using this drive in a Synology DiskStation DS211j, flawlessly serves media to 2 computers, an HTPC and an Android tablet without slowing down.

Cons: None.

Perfect for my needs

Synology DS211J Diskless System DiskStation 2-bay NAS Server for Small Office and Home Use

Pros: So far, so good. Picked this item up to serve out media to my myriad of desktop computers and Android devices scattered about the house. Admin system is entirely web based and works great on Chromium, a huge plus for Linux users. The little monitor application does come in a Linux version, as well. Transfer speeds are very good. Works just fine with SMB, NFS, FTP and web-based interfaces for loading and retrieving files. Feature set is through the roof. The DSM OS is phenomenally easy to use; uses a simple desktop metaphor.

Cons: Not really a 'con', but a first-time novice setting up a device like this could get lost in the amazing amount of features, settings, and options available. Go slow, and the built-in help system is excellent at guiding you to exactly the options you need.

Overall Review: I purchased a 3TiB drive to start off with, and intend to drop in another at a later date. Drive format and check takes a very, very long time on such a large capacity drive (fully expected). Also, so you don't have problems later the TOP slot (farthest away from the device's electronic board) is 'volume 1', and the DSM OS will take ~200MiB of space on that drive.

NZXT CS-NT-PANZER-B PANZERBOX Black Welded Aluminum ATX Mid Tower with Dual 190mm Fans Computer Case

Pros: Exceptionally light for it's size. Mostly tool-free setup, including thumb-screws for the drives, excellent touch! Only need a screwdriver to seat the motherboard and PSU. Very striking, and imposing look on the desktop. 2 Gigantic case fans, as well as a large exaust fan at the back make it about the best at air cooling of any case. For their size, they are quiet, and can hold paper with ease (moving a lot of air). PSU is entirely seperate from the rest of the computer thermally. It intakes from the side, and exausts to the back, brilliant design. Removable motherboard tray was a joy to work with, exceptionally easy to get everything seated properly the first time. Pre-drilled and fitted in the back for water cooling, includes all bracketing needed. Bracketing for 4 3.5" hard drives. Header cables for audio, eSATA, USB, etc are sufficient to reach the bottom of the motherboard without looping them over components.

Cons: If you are not used to having a large fan on your computer, the noise from them is high. This case isn't for grandma's quiet sitting room, it's for higher-end gaming components. They are, though, quieter than they first appear. The front and top fans require fan headers on your motherboard, make sure you have 2 available (or an adapter). The third at the back has standard 4pin bridge as well as fan header connection. PSU placement is on the bottom of the case, across from the motherboard. Double check to make absolutely sure your video card will clear it. It should, but if it's an exceptionally tall card, be certain to look into this first. Mine clears (system specs below) just barely.

Wow

MSI GeForce GTS 250 1GB GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 SLI Support Video Card N250GTS Twin Frozr 1G

Pros: Excellent card for the price point. Runs nice and cool under load, games appear nice and smooth. If you're trying to squeeze every last FPS, this may not be the card for you, but for 90% of the 'casual gaming' community out there, this is an excellent card that will last you for a while to come.

Cons: While it appears to remain cool at load, I do wish they'd sealed the back vents in the 2nd slot this card takes up, to channel all the heat directly out of the case. If you are building a machine, make sure you get a good case to hold this monster. It is as long as my motherboard, and very wide. I was a touch worried about clearance for width, as my PSU mounts on the bottom. It fits, with some wiggle room, but not much.

Modular and more than most systems will need

Thermaltake Black Widow W0319RU 850 W ATX 12V v2.3, EPS 12V v2.91 CrossFire Certified 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: I purchased this as part of a package deal, but I probably would have chosen it anyway. The modular design is something new to me, and I assure you will be on every PSU I purchase from now on. Very easy to install, high expandability options.

Cons: Wish they'd included a power adapter for fans, as my mainboard only has 1 extra fan header on it. Exceptionally minor quibble.
