SilenX EFX-08-15 80mm Effizio Quiet Case Fan

2 out of 5 eggs Good...and Bad 08/04/2014

This review is from: SilenX EFX-08-15 80mm Effizio Quiet Case Fan

Pros: Build quality looks quite good. Frame and fan are both quite sturdy. While running there is no vibration nor any electronics noise. The addition of both regular screws and isolation mounts (rubber screws) is a nice plus. Since I'm not a windowed case user it's nice to have the molex pigtailed so neither connector option ever gets lost.

Cons: I'm amazed that so few find these fans have a definite whine while running at the standard 12v. I bought both the EFX-08-15 (15db) and the EFX-08-12 (12db) versions thinking the 12 would be absolutely silent while the 15, if I strained hard enough, might have just a faint noise. Unfortunately I was surprised that both offer up blade induced airflow whining noise surpassing that of my purported 18db and 24db fans running at 12v.

Other Thoughts: Sadly I have to rate these SilenX fans low as my main reason for buying them was the claim of being quiet. While the airflow is greater than expected so is the noise.

The Linkworld FAN-8-2 80mm fans I bought here about 2 weeks prior for 1/3 the price (multi-discount) are rated 30db @2600 RPM but are much quieter when comparing airflow noise. Unfortunately they do have an ever so slight ticking noise and less airflow than the SilenX. I was expecting to under-volt the Linkworld fans for near silent use but they are quiet enough out of the box at 12v albeit a bit airflow challenged.

3 out of 5 eggs Decent budget fan 08/04/2014

This review is from: Linkworld Electronic LLC FAN-8-2 80mm Case cooler

Pros: Quiet. Inexpensive when buying multiples.

Cons: See my "Other Thoughts".

Other Thoughts: The fans I received are labled "Kingmot Model: DFS802512H". I don't have a tach but the RPM seems to be a fair bit lower than specified for the Linkworld FAN-8-2. That probably explains the nearly silent fan at 12v. Works out well for me as I was planning to under-volt anyhow. Bought 2 and while one is nearly inaudible in operation the other does have a slight bearing type ticking noise.

Basically bought these to use for temporary backup or temporary supplemental light duty cooling needs. They look to be worthy of this, not sure I'd use them as a permanent cooling solution.
