Pros: It worked fine for 3 days.
Cons: And then after a re-boot it would no longer start. I contacted StarTech technical support, and after waiting over 30 minutes for a technician, I was told that they believed the board was defective & should be returned.
Other Thoughts: I am returning the board through StarTech because they pay for shipping both ways. They estimate that I will have the replacement in 2-3 weeks.READ FULL REVIEW
Pros: The card provides 4 USB 3.0 channels, one for each port. So instead of having the ports share channels, each port has its own 5Gbps channel for maximum bandwidth per port.
Thoughtfully accepts both LP4 and SATA power connections.
Excellent lifetime technical support from StarTech. I called tech support about the card before my purchase to make sure that I understood the differences between this card and the PEXUSB3S42V card (this card has 4 channels, the other has only 2), and the technician I spoke with was very knowledgeable and helpful.
Cons: Unfortunately the USB slots on the card are flush with the bracket, making it impossible to plug into them without modification to the back of most PC chassis. If they had been made to protrude past the typical chassis' expansion card framework, or if they were rotated 90 degrees, that would be better. As it was I had to take a pair of wire cutters and open up the back of my chassis so that my USB cables could plug into the card when it was in place.
In my situation the card was a bit of a bear to install, Right below a big graphics card. It was hard to seat properly in the PCI Express slot and took a bit of fiddling and 5 reboots before the card was detected by my OS.
Other Thoughts: I went to the StarTech website (http://www.startech.com/Cards-Adapters/USB-3.0/Cards/PCI-Express-USB-3-Card-4-Dedicated-Channels-4-Port~PEXUSB3S44V) to download and install the latest drivers in advance of the installation. Once I got past getting the card detected, Windows recognized it, applied the drivers and all was well.
I have purchased several StarTech products (SATA card, SATA dock, SATA HDD enclosures) and all have worked flawlessly. I just wish they had spent a little more time testing the installation of this card and then engineering a fix to the problem of actually being able to plug into it.
Pros: Easy to install and use.
Cons: Only supports 2 drives in any configuration.
You can have 2 eSATA or 2 SATA or 1 eSATA+1 SATA, but despite the fact that each eSATA port can support 2 drives, you can't use them both at the same time for 2 drives each. You can only use both ports the same time for 1 drive each.
