ASUS H81I-PLUS LGA 1150 Intel H81 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Mini ITX Intel Motherboard
  • Owned For: 1 month to 1 year

1 out of 5 eggs devices only intermittently detected at post 07/24/2014

This review is from: ASUS H81I-PLUS LGA 1150 Intel H81 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Mini ITX Intel Motherboard

Pros: none

Cons: After another HTPC motherboard decided to die, I thought I would change brands and get a trusty ASUS. It was a nightmare because the SSD only appeared about 30%of the time after reboot. Same with the optical drive. So I thought it must be the bios, so I updated it. Still the same problem. I did put an old mechanical sata hdd and that seemed to fix it for the boot drive, but the optical drive was still only showing up about 75% of the time at post. So I bought a brand new PSU, problem persists. I've never seen a motherboard behave this way after 15 years of builds. I think it has something to do with these new UEFI systems, they just had to take something that was working fine for 20 years and make it even more prone to error. What good is a fancy UEFI if the motherboard is too blind to notice that there are devices connected to it by wires?

Other Thoughts: When you buy computer equipment, build it right away so you can go through the hell of finding out which of these rats nests will actually work, cause it seems 20% of motherboards are broken when you buy them.

5 out of 5 eggs helpful tip 01/09/2008

This review is from: SYBA SD-EXPC34-2F 2-ports FireWire 1394a ExpressCard /34mm

Pros: works

Cons: doesnt not work

Other Thoughts: With my Dell Inspiron 1720, this expresscard only works if I boot up with the card inserted. If I insert it and try to use it any other time, my audio interface doesnt work. I repeat, the machine must be started with the card inserted.

5 out of 5 eggs syba ExpressCard TI 1394 01/01/2008

This review is from: SYBA SD-EXPC34-2F 2-ports FireWire 1394a ExpressCard /34mm

Pros: Works flawlessly between my Dell Inspiron 1720 and an Edirol FA-66 firewire audio interface.

Cons: none.

Other Thoughts: I decided to take a risk, and this little device made the difference between me returning the Dell and not. (re: the ricoh firewire chipsets all dell machines use are problematic with many firewire audio interfaces out there.) I disabled my existing firewire device, hope that helps somebody.
