Categories > Onboard Camera Systems > Falcon Zero > Falcon Zero F170HD+ Full-HD 1080p Dashcam 32GB Memory Card Included

Rating + 2Rating + 2Rating + 2Rating + 2Rating + 2 The camera died soon after warranty expiration (13 months)
Pros: Video quality is excellent at daylight but hardly acceptable at night.
Camera case is sturdy and solid
Supports 64 GB card
Cons: * A separate GPS receiver with a cable is bulky and cumbersome
* Included software is of demo version. Must pay extra $15 to register that.
* There is a up to 100-150 yards lag between actual car position displayed on video and that on the map.
* Cable clips on adhesive mounting tape don't work even on smooth surface. They all fall down at 80° F temperature.
* Sometimes audio and video are not synchronized.

====== update 13 month later ======
The camera died soon after warranty expiration.
Other Thoughts: * I have a similar not branded 1920x1080, 30 fps product with built-in GPS antenna with same quality but 50% cheaper
* A separate GPS receiver finds satellites a bit faster than with embedded antenna.
*Night vision with IR LEDs works at very short distance only, actually as far as you car bumper.

Categories > Onboard Camera Systems > CRIME STOPPER > CRIMESTOPPER CA-5010.II Parking-Sensor System with Top Display (Without Metal Bumper Sensors)

Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4 Great unit until the display started to fail.
Pros: Relatively easy to install, and worked very well for the first few months. I found the number of feet shown on the display quite accurate.
Cons: Unfotunately, over the last few months the LED segments of the display have begun to fail, so that it has become quite a puzzle trying to decide what number it's attempting to show.

Other Thoughts: At least the audible alarm still works.

Categories > Onboard Camera Systems > 4Sight, LLC. > The Original Dash Cam 2 Dual Lens Dashboard Camera

Rating + 2Rating + 2Rating + 2Rating + 2Rating + 2 not what I expected
Pros: -duel lens recording for close up and wide angle
-g-force sensor for auto recording
-audio recording
Cons: -max 8GB card?
-check gforce sensor setting so that you won't get erroneous recordings
-custom charger, so you are at the vendors mercy if you need a new one
Other Thoughts: -my charger was broken upon arrival so I can't really use it constantly
-I have to charge it through the GPS port
-called the vendor and they were supposed to send me a replacement charger, but it has been over two weeks...

Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1 Battery NG as warranty ran out!!
Pros: One egg for looks. Good looking camera ,THAT'S IT !!!
Cons: The camera never worked very good from the start. At all sensitivity settings the camera would record at the slightest bump on the highway.Would never hold a good charge.
The battery is completely shot as the one year warranty ran out. Purchased in August 2015 dropped dead in September 2016.
Other Thoughts: Looks great, but is junk!

Categories > Onboard Camera Systems > 4Sight, LLC. > The Original Dash Cam 2 Dual Lens Dashboard Camera

Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1 Decent product ruined by software bug
Pros: - Dual cameras easy to adjust and point, great for quickly pointing it out your drivers side window if talking to someone.
- Playback software fairly simple
- Easy to extract to AVI
- Came in handy catching a scammer
Cons: - Software bug prevents the date from incrementing past the end of the month. In fact it goes backwards in time about 3 weeks. When it deletes the oldest video files, it deletes yesterdays and preserves the end of the month files because the date is wrong. They claim there will be no firmware updates to fix this.
- The power/data adapter does not seat properly in the device over time, nor is it a standard format like microUSB. I've already had the adapter replaced once and the second is acting up.
- The video data is hidden on the SD card and can only be extracted using their software
- Can only view video using MS Windows
Other Thoughts: - Extract and files you think you may need immediately. It does not matter how big a card you have, unless you are fixing the date on a monthly basis, you never know what data files it will delete on next power-on.

Categories > Onboard Camera Systems > DOD Tech Co., Ltd > DOD Tech DOD-LS470W Full HD dash cam with Sony Exmor CMOS Sensor and 10x speed GPS processor

Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4 Descent camera, great night time performance
Pros: - Good day and great night time performance.

- Included suction cup mount holds firm even in extreme desert heat and dirt road vibration.

- Relatively straight forward interface is easy to navigate(*1).

- Stores in MPEG format, so it is easy to replay/edit clips on another device.

- Will take up to 128GB cards formatted in FAT32 according to the manufacturer, PNY 64GB card tested and works without issue(*2). Any good quality UHC-1/Class10 or better card should work fine.
Cons: - Decent video and dynamic range, but video compression level is to high. License plates can not be read more than about 1-1/2 to 2 car lengths away.

- No way to disable the display screen. Can only be set to show the current image and status or a "heads up display" of the current speed and direction. The HUD isn't to bright at night, but a display off mode would be better.

- Included suction mount has a long arm which make it difficult to discreetly mount the camera behind a rear view mirror. The permanent mount is shorter, but still not enough(*3).

- Camera lens protrudes/unguarded and is far to easy to get finger prints all over when mounting.

- Locking a current recording file using the camera "SOS" button does not locked the preceding or following video files. This is a problem when the current file began just before or ends just after the button is pressed (*4).

- No easy way to quickly unlock groups of saved videos, other than removing the card and deleting/moving externally. Locked files can quickly accumulate from the G-shock sensor.

- Locked files are moved to a "RO" read-only subdirectory, but if you move a file to that directory externally, the file will be overwritten unless you remove write file permissions(*4).

- I experienced multiple missing segments of video when testing (entire files missing from the beginning, middle, or end of a recording session). It is unclear if this occurred due to extremely heat (direct sunlight and 110-115F external temperatures on the dash with no A/C), or some of my card formatting tests (odd/custom formatting options *2). After reformatting with camera and slightly cooler temps (100-105F regularly) , I have not experienced any further file loss.

- Does not include a starter memory card, which may be a bit of a problem for someone who does not read the description very very closely. Experienced users will probably be buying a larger card from the start.
Other Thoughts: The major downfall over the camera is the lack of video compression adjustment. The manufacturer seems to have set the compression rate to optimize for a constant data rate (5min video files are all 622MB regardless on scene complexity, roughly 7.8 hours of video on a 64GB card). That works fine for trip video or capturing the event sequence of an accident. If you are in an accident though, you may have wanted the better video quality necessary to read a license plate on the other side of an intersection (fewer hours of video on the card and variable video file size, but with higher video detail). Hopefully, the manufacturer will release firmware update to allow the end user to adjust the compression settings.

Overall, this is a pretty good quality camera with good day and nighttime performance. Far better video than the cheap cameras and has held up to several months of desert summer heat without issue. The Cons and comments should not be taken (for the most part) as failures of the camera, but as comparisons to features which may/may no exists in other high end cameras.

* - The interface is fairly easy to understand, though the multifunction "Enter/Confirm" configuration button is a bit awkward in relation to the "Menu" button. Some of the menu options are in different locations/orders than indicated in the manual. Unfortunately, no way to change the video compression levels.

** - According to the manufacturer, cards over 32GB can not be reformatted natively by the camera and must be reformatted using the manufacturer's external program. In fact, any external FAT32 utility can be used. I used a simple mkfs.vfat to reformat my cards. Once initially formatted FAT32, the camera can reformat cards greater than 32GB. The camera wants a 128 sector per cluster and will complain/want to subsequently reformat the card if not present. The camera will also format the card with extra reserved and hidden sectors with a proprietary manufacturer tag. It is unclear if these extra sectors are used for internal housekeeping or not, but may explain the video loss issue I had when initially testing different formatting options.

*3 - The closer the camera can be mounted to the windshield, the more discreet the camera can be mounted and the less internal reflection/interference the camera will have to deal with, resulting in a better picture.

*4 - Example: I recorded an intersection crash some distance ahead of me where I pushed the button shortly after the crash had ended. The video of the crash vehicle entering the intersection and striking the first car was at the end of the preceding file, while the video of the crash vehicle striking subsequent cars and riding up over the curb to a stop was in the locked file. I manually moved the preceding file to the "RO" locked file directory on the card, but did not know to change its file permissions. The file was subsequently overwritten in normal camera operation... So the "RO" read-only directory has no meaning, only the actual file permission.
