A personal cloud drive gives users remote access to their data without using a public cloud service. It connects to a router, home server or a networked computer and can be accessed via any web browser or through mobile apps that are available for Android™ and iOS®. Basic personal cloud storage devices have a single drive, offer 500MB of data and connect to a WiFi router using an ethernet cable. More complex devices incorporate multiple drives and provide 16TB of data or more, giving ample storage for personal files.
Many people have multiple computers and devices that they use to access files and data. From laptops to desktops, and cell phones to tablets, most people use multiple devices to access their personal data and even work files. Accessing files from multiple devices means carrying a portable drive, using a flash drive or uploading information to online cloud services. With a personal cloud drive, it is possible to access information from any of your devices wherever you are and without having to carry additional peripherals.
A personal cloud drive comes with its own operating system and software. This facilitates a simple setup and device manufacturers include wizard-style setup so that buyers are up and running in a matter of minutes. Apps are also available for iOS and Android phones, enabling you to access and save files from mobile devices like cell phones and tablets.
Having a central repository of data means that you can and write information to your personal cloud drive from multiple devices. Once set up, you will be able to sync devices so that they automatically save new files to your cloud and update existing files with any changes that you make. Most devices provide the software to make this process easier, enabling you to choose a specific folder or drive partition to sync with the cloud storage device. This prevents you from having to manually transfer data from a desktop hard drive or laptop drive to your networked personal cloud storage device, reducing time and freeing up space. It also means that you will always access the latest version of a file.
One use of a personal cloud drive is as a data backup. Once you have synced data between devices and your wireless hard drive, you can automatically run a daily backup so that a damaged device won't mean lost data. Only those with password details will be able to access your data.
You can use a Bluetooth® external hard drive to store personal files as well as movies, videos, and music. You can access the data using devices like cell phones, laptops, and even media players, many of which have different connection interfaces. Once you've connected the personal cloud drive to a router, you access data wirelessly which means that you don't have to worry about different connection interfaces. You won't need separate wires for Mac hard drives and mobile phones.
