DEFINE R5 Blackout EditionDEFINE R5 Blackout Edition

The Fractal Design Define R5 Blackout Edition is the next evolution in the widely popular Define Series. Packed with intelligently designed enthusiast-oriented features delivering a silent case with powerful and expansive air and liquid cooling support, presented in a stunning Scandinavian inspired construction.

The Define R5 Blackout Edition case reaches the highest level of silent computing through strategically placed dense sound-absorbing material, ModuVent™ fan vent covers and finely tuned all black Dynamic Series fans.

The Define R5 Blackout Edition was designed with configurability in mind, accommodating up to 8 hard drives and all modern graphics card. Should you wish to expand your system with water cooling components or more fans the layout can easily be configured to meet your demand.

Key features

  • Extensive water cooling support for a case of this size; housing radiators up to 420mm in the top and 360mm in the front
  • Equipped with new tool-less ModuVent™ fan slot covers allowing the user to install more fans if desired or keep fan slots covered to maximize sound absorption.
  • Including two all-black Fractal Design Dynamic GP14 140mm fans developed for superlative airflow while still maintaining low noise levels.
  • Maintaining a dust-free interior with the help of dust filters that cover front and bottom air intakes that are easy to access from the front on the case.
  • Newly configured front door with dual side mounting to better fit your work space
  • Highlighting 2 dedicated SSD mounts cleanly placed behind the motherboard tray that feature innovative new brackets delivering a tool-free installation and removal

  • Sturdy metal HDD trays provide excellent dampening features for the hard drives while providing better airflow through the cage with an updated, more open design
  • The new and innovative Quick Release System on the left side of the case provides secure mounting of the left side panel, yet grants quick and easy access to the system.

Very nice case

Pros: - Tons of room
- Cooling is not an issue
- Very quiet
- Heavy
- Lots of drive cages

Cons: - Wish it came in Silver or Grey

Other Thoughts: Don't make the mistake of thinking it's very quiet but not "silent". I can still hear the fans on my GPU and PSU but they are pretty noisy.

Seriously, this is probably the best quiet case I've seen or used although I've never used a Nanoxia case.

Whisper Quiet Build Case

Pros: -Quiet
-Even if case was is not on sale would recommend

Cons: N/A

Other Thoughts: I was in need of a new system so I chose to build as quiet as possible within my price range. This was the keystone to my entire build. It did not disappoint.

Excellent Case

Pros: -Spacious Case
-Fits huge Noctua NH-D15 without a problem
-Exactly what I needed for internal drive storage (2 SSD, 8 HDD), and still 2 5.25" bays open for usage if I got an internal optical
-Price point at < $110 is a good value.

I originally wanted the new R6, but I think I like this one better. Fractal could not sell me accessories for the R6 so I went for the next best thing. I think the "modu-vent" on the R5 is a bit more durable for taking apart and putting back together - based on owning the R5 and seeing the reviews on the R6

The case is solid and very quiet.

Cons: Only 2 case fans included, and in my opinion, they are nothing to write home about. They are quiet, but I am not sure how well they move the air. I took the stock fan from the rear and mounted it up front to maintain the solid black look. Then I added a pair of Noctua NF-A14FLX fans to the bottom intake, and rear exhaust. This gave me better air flow, maintained positive pressure, and kept everything as quiet as I want.

Other Thoughts: Would definitely recommend buying this, and I would buy it again. As a matter of fact, I already bought two!

Excellent case, and good looking.

Pros: The case arrived on time.
It's easy to build, a lot a space to maneuver and for extra hard drives.
Offers many possible configurations.
Silent.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I highly recommend to buy this nice looking and efficient PC case, to build a very good engine.

Nice case - a bit of a PIA to install a Rampage IV extreme

Pros: Nice build
Easy to use
Silence is golden

Cons: Had to buy a 2nd front case fan, too bad it wasn't included (no biggie)

Other Thoughts: Got sick of the noise from my Corsair H100i and the "old" looking original Cooler master cosmos in which I had about 6 fans going. I sort of felt like I was working next to a launch pad with all the air noise... I decided to go back to a "silent air" solution and a more modern and sleek looking case. This looked like the perfect case paired with a Noctua D15s cooler for me to try.
Install went well - yes, make sure you attach fan header first as it would be a major PIA to do after the D15H is locked down.
Great clearance on my setup - running strix 970's in SLI and have a Xonar Essence populating the PCI slots...so its a pretty full load in there... I also have 4 sticks of Dominator platinum in there too - no problems with clearance with the Noctua. My CPU is an overclocked 3820 running a 4.5GHZ on 1.4 volts and my temps are slightly higher than the H100i (30 idle, 65 load) but I did change cases to this very silent Fractal Define r5 so some of this may be due to a slightly lower airflow in the smaller case. Just a note that the rampage iv is a long board and getting it to fit into the define r5 caused some difficulty with the cable routing but with perseverance I was able to do a nice clean routing job. I did add the 2nd front case fan in my Blackout R5 and now when I'm working or playing games, the only sound is a very slight whisper of air when you have the case fans on high, when on low, its virtually silent (note: the case sits on my desk about 18" from my ears)...what a joy to have silence again!!

Awesome Tower

Pros: There is plenty of room for everything. It makes cable management super easy. I recommend it to anyone.

Cons: None really. 2 usb ports don't work, but I'm pretty sure that is all my fault.

Great case, great deal

Pros: Very quiet, well made, versatile configurations

Cons: I have not encountered any

Other Thoughts: I own an R4 from a previous build, which I liked very much. The only complaint I had about that one was the front panel and it's associated wiring. This one fixes all of that. Build quality is superb and cable management is great. The case is beautiful, and I have already received a ton of compliments on it. I added 3 140mm fans (also Fractal) and the cpu cooler I used has 2, and you can't even tell it's turned on.

Build specs:
ASRock Taichi Z370
i7-8770k
32gb TridentZ 3200 Ram (16gb x 2, CL14)
512gb Samsung 960 Pro PCIe SSD
be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3 CPU Cooler

I am quite pleased with this case.

Pros: Roomy.
Sturdy.
Versatile.
Quiet.

Cons: The 5.25" drive bracket is a little harder to remove than it should be. Most changes can be made with no tools, but this bracket requires a screwdriver.

Other Thoughts: This is a sweet case. The most pleasant surprise is how quiet the included fans are. At full speed, the loudest fan is the one that came with my CPU cooler. The fans are so quiet that there's really no point in the 3-speed fan controller because the top speed is quiet enough that you might as well leave it there.

The motherboard standoffs are very easy to install, especially considering it comes with the tool for the job. Don't be like me and realize this after hunting all over the house for a little nut driver, just use the little plastic one it comes with!

This is the first case I've ever owned where every switch, button, light, USB port, and audio jack on the front worked the first time I powered up. The motherboard connectors are clearly and well marked, so it was a breeze to get them all properly seated.

Another nice thing is that despite its sturdiness and size, it's still fairly light and easy to maneuver, and the base legs and way the edges are rounded means I didn't scratch my kitchen table all up while I was building. Because that's where everyone builds their computers. Admit it.
