Great drive. Very quiet and surprisingly fast

Pros: Title says it all. Drive has been working great since I got it. It has been running nearly 24/7 as a shared Steam library, backup drive and large content storage such as video renders, photoshop cache and scratch disk for After Effects. My PC still remains nearly silent even with this one mechanical drive.

Cons: None really. Works how a, HDD should

Hi Anonymous,

We regret to hear your experience with the WD Red NAS internal hard drive did not function as expected and our thanks for the time providing this feedback. As a troubleshooting step, please test the drive on Windows using our Data Lifeguard Diagnostics program. If it passes the test we recommend testing another drive bay or SATA port on your system.

We have placed a few helpful links below providing more information for your convenience.

If the test is unfortunately inconclusive and you just purchased the drive then you should be able to return it to the place of purchase. However, if you are past their return policy, you can create an RMA through WD and replace the drive under warranty if necessary.

Excellent paperweight, doesn't do much else

Pros: Will reliably keep papers from flying away
Will eat your money, no questions asked

Cons: Broke before I ever got to use it

Other Thoughts: Not buying anything this company has so much as glanced at; plugged this drive in one day and didn't have an opportunity to use it for a while. Then my first drive filled up and I tried to format this one. Turns out it was completely bricked, though I'm sure it was working before.

50/50

Pros: Made by Western Digital
NASware firmware for compatibility
Small and home office NAS systems in a 24x7 environment

Cons: None - see other

Other Thoughts: My drives were *not* configured in a RAID. I purchased them to run alongside each other, for a total of 8TB.

Both drives purchased on 9/6/2016. The "3 year limited warranty" appears to be from the date the drive is scanned out from WD, since my 3 years wouldn't be up until 9/6/2019; but the RMA indicated I have 89 days left (on the 3 year warranty) as of 23 Jan 2019.

One of these drives began failing SMART on or around 23 Jan 2019. Initially with 32 bad sectors, but within 4 days, SMART reported 299 bad sectors -

Error 1146 occurred at disk power-on lifetime: 20213 hours (842 days + 5 hours)

*All* HDDs fail, I get; but I've have 5 WD drives fail vs 2 Seagate. YMMV

Lots of capacity, reasonable price

Pros: -- Big disk

Cons: -- Negligent shipping

Other Thoughts: Bought two of these to go in a new file/music server, to replace failing hardware. They have ben up and running for a day, no problems so far.

Knocking off an egg for pathetic packaging. The two drives came in a small cardboard box, held in place in the box by two flimsy plastic pieces, which would have been ok if there had been enough other packing material to protect the disk drives. There was a folded up FedEx bag stuffed in one side of the box, protecting the drive on that side, but nothing more. When it arrived, one side (the side with no protection) was crushed in. Looked like it had received rough treatment in transit.

Fortunately both drives spun up without a problem, but it could have been worse. You'd think that Platinum Micro would want to take a bit more care when shipping things like big disk drives.

4 of 4 DOA

Pros: 5400 RPM on SATA 6GB/s w 64MB Cache & / 4 TB

Cons: 4 of 4 arrived Dead On Arrival

Other Thoughts: I won't be ordering this product again. Not sure if I should blame WD, NewEggBusiness or the shipping company. Box was fine. WD has always treated me good in the past. Unfortunately, I didnt get to test them till recently so the I can't return them. Maybe they go bad if they sit for a long time.

3 new drives for my NAS zero duds

Pros: Now first drive (an Eggxpert Review Item) is in running 24/7 in my HTPC for five years

Just purchased three new Red 4TB installed in my new Qnap TS-328. Passed the long test and now running and holding my precious pictures. Drive vintage was Jun 2018, so fairly fresh considering the sale price.

Great value when on sale, don't have to mess with drive "shucking" and all of that.
------------------
Just a follow up on my review of 10/31/2013 .

The drive is still running strong, with no errors as of today

From what I've read, if you get a good one..it's really good..if you get a bad one...well you have to spin the wheel of data loss and hope you have been imaging the drive on a regular basis if it lands on "fatal error"

Cons: No coupon for a free trip to CES/Vegas

Other Thoughts: I'm managed to retain most of my computer files from as far back as a mac + with a serial based disk drive ( that was 20MEGABYTES for $1299). I'd love to toss my collection of 47GB full height 14 pound seagates, but I like the noise they make when they spin up.

hey IBM...where is that pixie dust gel cube 10GTB storage device.....>?

In the meantime, drives are cheap and data is expensive..so keep backups!
