ultra high quality build

Pros: If you bought a Supermicro board for over $300, and you complain about lack of SLI... you have not much of a clue what this board is for and who it is for. It is super stable. Perfect electrically. High level of adjustability. You also get USA based, US Citizens answering the telephone when your call them. The engineer who designed the board here in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA talks to you and answers any question possible. Anything. They don’t have tech support guys, they have electrical engineers answering the telephone! Any combination one could ever think of for computing, this board can do. Other than SLI. Which was cool in 2008.

Cons: Only cons are other reviewers who should have bought a gigabyte board to frag their fortnite friends

this mb has potential

Pros: - two network ports, one of which supports 10 Gb/s (plus wi-fi & bluetooth)
- PLX bridge allows two 16xpcie3.0 or four 8xpcie3.0 (somewhat--you still can't push more than 16 lanes of b/w to the cpu). It still is fantastic and what drew me to this m/b.
- claims to support processors up to 140W (you're fooling nobody Intel)
- recognized and used the XMP values for my g.skill 3600 MHz sticks
- USB 3.1 gen 2 for the front-panel connection

Cons: For this board being marketed as 'pro gaming', capable of 4-way SLI, one would expect a SLI bridge to be included. Nope, not even a cheap flexible one.
Now it's been a while since I bought a new m/b, but I expect a printed manual to be included. The quick reference guide was the only paper product included. How am I supposed to cross out the labeling error on pg. 2-36 so that I don't waste another half hour trying to figure out why my hard drive isn't being recognized because my m.2 drive disabled the other SATA ports?
I have yet to figure out how to disable USB devices from generating a beep when being connected. I don't mind it for the occasional plugging in of a USB stick, but during POST the board starts beeping up a Morse code storm while it identifies all the connected devices!

Other Thoughts: After that other review mentioned drivers on the (90's flavoured-) webpage being outdated, they have all since been updated. (less than a week!) SuperO Booster version 2 included.
It can be a little slow to boot, but there is a fast boot option to speed things up a bit.
HDMI 2.0--sorry not something I care about.
The RGB was promptly disabled. Almost had a heart attack thinking my m/b was faulty with the freaky flashing when first plugged in.
The UEFI/BIOS is odd. I too have felt the pain to trying to get Windows to recognize my m.2 drive as EFI. Supermicro should really have a forum for users.
The sound is pretty good. Unfortunately when the board powers down you will get a pop. Remove headphones before shutdown.

I'm now overclocked and stable, and filling up the pcie slots. This m/b should do everything I need. I'm just hoping that I don't have to play with the BIOS anymore.

Hey Supermicro, please print out and send me that user's manual. I still need one, and am waiting.

Manufacturer Response:
Hello Jim,

Thank you for the review and I understand the inconvenience this has caused. Supermicro strives to have the highest quality components and service to provide the best experience to any level of user.

In regards to multiple graphic card technology support the C9Z390-PGW will only support AMD CrossfireX which is the reason why the motherboard does not come with a SLI bridge included.

We would like to get in contact with you to go over more in detail with the issues you’ve experienced so we can continue to better our product now and in the future.

Awful driver support, BIOS update process, box doesn't match the board, and sketchy HDMI 2.0a LSPCon

Pros: Onboard 10 GbE and 4x PCIe x16 (physical) slots is nice. Also has Intel CNVi for Gigabit WiFi (up to 1.733 Gbps). Supports the 9th gen processors, which I am running (i5-9600K). I like the reinforced PCIe and DIMM slots.

Cons: As someone trying to use this board for its HDMI 2.0, this board was a huge waste of time.

They advertise HDMI 2.0, but it's only HDMI 2.0a, and it's a faulty HDMI 2.0a implementation at that. The HDMI 2.0a LSPCon (an onboard Parade-brand PS175 DisplayPort to HDMI 2.0a adapter) doesn't output HDR metadata at 4K30Hz and glitches out (no signal at all) when enabling HDR at 4K60Hz. Truthfully, that makes the whole board pointless. What's the point of adding HDMI 2.0 if your LSPCon is faulty? Who's going to cough up the dough for the HDMI feature and not want HDR?

And to make matters worse, the board shipped inside the wrong box. It came in a box for Supermicro's C9Z390-CGW mobo. None of the box labels match the board inside. That can't be right. Just feels really sketchy, and really unprofessional.

And as for Supermicro support, well, I'm hoping they're able to put things right. They have no hours on the weekends at all, so my support case is still unanswered.

Other Thoughts: The driver download page is a PITA to navigate. I have to agree to a TOS for *every* *single* *separate* *download*? Are you kidding me?

The SuperO software is poorly designed and requires multiple reboots in order to update the BIOS, and offers no single "update all my drivers" functionality. Get with the program, Supermicro.

The LED light show defaults to a seizure-inducing twitching effect that's really unappealing.

And to top it off, the Intel Graphics Driver (v. 24.20 and 25.20) don't even install on this board -- it claims I have no compatible hardware which is patently false. Uh, hello? I have i5-9600K and Z390 board. Are you kidding? Of course, Supermicro's website is no help. I had to download the ZIP driver to install it. Ugh.

Pretty good for the money but a few quirks

Pros: Yes...4 slot PCI-E thanks to glorious PLX chip...enough said.
HDMI 2.0 -- READ THIS -- yes it's minor for most people but to my knowledge this is the ONLY HDMI 2.0 board available in ATX form-factor. The BIOS has a PAVP setting too, so if you've been wanting to watch UHD Blu-Rays without downgrading to ITX form-factor, then buy this board.
Plenty of fan headers for my Thermaltake case.
Integrated 10Gb LAN and Intel WiFi work excellently as expected.
Glad we finally have USB 3.1 Gen2 and SATA3 standard...
This board will probably hold me over until Tiger Lake

Cons: POST takes exactly TWICE as long with same CPU, RAM, and SSD as it did on my prior ASRock board (18 secs vs 9 secs). Yikes!

UEFI BIOS is a little weird. Everything was intuitive with my ASRock board, very detailed descriptions and straight forward menus. This board is OK but if you don't set it right you will find yourself lost in an EFI shell, which amusingly scrolls the commands too quickly to jot them down.

Pain in the drain to configure dual graphics. ASRock, you could just use Windows settings and easily switch from integrated to discrete no problem. "Technically" you can do that with this board, but it will hang up on the desktop (stutter) like crazy, basically useless, if you try to have both integrated and discrete enabled at the same time. If you're wondering why I want both, it's because Nvidia doesn't support UHD Blu-Ray, so you can only watch on the integrated graphics (another reason for wanting HDMI 2.0 onboard). So far my workaround is to go into the BIOS and disable PCI-E slot 3 whenever I want to watch a UHD movie.

No integrated security device. Not a big deal, but my ASRock allowed TPM-ish BitLocker without needing startup PIN. This board does have a TPM header but it's a proprietary 10-pin module for 60 bucks (part AOM-TPM-9670V). If you do get the module, you will need to boot in UEFI and have a GPT hard disk to get it to work without a key or PIN.

At least for now, DON'T download the drivers from Supermicro's website (the one that looks like 1999); most of them are oddly outdated or don't even belong to this model (i.e. for this board they have 5Gb LAN driver when this model is actually 10Gb, slightly different chip). The "SuperO" website doesn't have anything yet, and the board launched weeks ago. Also, SuperO Booster version 2 (which is the latest I could find), does not work and is not included on the disc.

Other Thoughts: Came with late September BIOS. Website only has older BIOS from August. Not sure why...

I will never use U.2 but it's nice to have that capability.

Didn't hesitate to buy despite the bad press around the company (assume zero privacy with any web-connected devices....alleged incidents took place over 3 years ago anyway)...

If you will never tweak BIOS settings, never need to boot to desktop before you receive another text message, and never need to watch UHD movies while easily switching to play the latest games, then this board will suit you just fine.
