Boasting high performance SATA+SAS ports, the LSI 9201-16i host bus adapter offers a great solution to today's growing storage requirements. It offers dynamic SAS functionality including dual-port drive redundancy and SATA compatibility to protect your investment. Regardless of the drive speed, this 6 Gb/s adapter can deliver up to twice the performance level in both read and write applications as compared to their 3 Gb/s predecessors, providing the greatest available throughput to internal server storage arrays.

6Gb/s SATA+SAS Advantage
The LSI SAS 9201-16i host bus adapter (HBA) enables large-scale storage arrays through high-speed 6Gb/s ports, supporting up to 512 SATA and SAS physical devices. It bolsters high capacity server storage RAID and non-RAID enclosures by pairing a x8 PCI Express 2.0 host interface with four internal x4 SFF8087 Mini-SAS connectors.
6Gb/s SAS technology enhancements, such as End-to-End CRC, power management, and hot plug support, combine to produce an extremely powerful yet dependable solution. Additionally, the T-10 Protection Model delivers early detection of and recovery from data corruption while Spread Spectrum Clocking reduces EMI emissions. Other new features include greater signal integrity and longer cables using Decision Feedback Equalization and support for more sophisticated SAS topologies using Expander Self-discovery/Self-configuration.
Flexible to Fit Your Needs
LSI SATA+SAS HBAs build upon previous generations of industry-leading LSI SAS technology, delivering performance and power saving advantages along with the added assurance gained from robust interoperability testing. Built to handle the constantly changing and complex requirements of enterprise storage, LSI HBAs effortlessly manage the need for larger capacity, greater density and scalability.
The LSI SAS 9201-16i works easily with SATA and SAS, hard disk drives, solid state drives, and tape drives. It also doubles the performance of previous generation SATA+SAS HBAs and is optimal for driving cost-effective and reliable scalability in today’s data centers.
Operating System Support
The LSI SAS 9201-16i host bus adapter supports Microsoft Windows, Linux (SuSE, Red Hat), Solaris, and VMware operating systems. All OS drivers are backed by extensive testing and validation to ensure optimum system performance.
Pros: I'm currently using this to run 12 hard drives in an unRaid build. It came flashed in IT mode so I didn't have to worry about that, but I did go ahead and flash the latest firmware. Performance is no different from having the drives attached directly to my motherboard (meaning it's perfectly fine)
Cons:
This is now legacy hardware. It works fine, but support might be iffy if you have any trouble with it.
Took me a while to find the legacy downloads page to get the latest firmware.
Other Thoughts: Heatsink gets pretty hot, so I have a fan blowing towards it.
Pros: 2x more ports than 9211-8i, slightly less than 2x power draw of 9211-8i.
Cons:
Same PCI-E 2.0 x8 as 9211-8i, but this should not be a significant bottleneck unless using expanders.
Does not come with latest firmware.
Other Thoughts:
Ordered April 2018. Card has build date November 2016 (sticker on box). LSISAS2116 chip. It came with Firmware version 20.00.02.00, ChipRevision 0x02, Bios 07.39.00.00.
The latest (last?) firmware is 20.00.07.00, release date 11-FEB-16. The firmware package includes DOS program sas2flsh.exe, but I got the "Failed to initialize PAL. Exiting program" error. It worked using sas2flash.efi by having BIOS boot to EFI.
Since newegg denies reviews with URLs and LSI/Avago/Broadcom keeps moving the files around and this card doesn't even have a web page for it on their site, you have to use the search function on the Broadcom website to find the download files for this card.
1. Latest firmware BIOS package
Use search terms "9201 P20" on Broadcom website search box.
[zip] 9201-16i_Package_P20_IT_Firmware_BIOS_for_MSDOS_Windows Date: 04/04/2016
2. search for "sas2flash.efi". Click on "Flashing firmware and BIOS on LSI SAS HBAs"
Look for "SAS2Flash for 92xx SAS 2 Host Bus Adapters":
shell_s2flash.zip
Flash tool for SAS 2 products
Version 20.00.00.00
Pros:
gave me 16 drives with no issue
pretty good performance nearly as fast and mobo onboard
Cons: fan on heat sink would be nice
Pros: It is very good for windows storage space. I have two of these cards running on my windows 2012 file server , giving me 32 internal ports, plus the 8 ports on the motherboard, my server can support up to 40 drives total. I haven't used up all the ports yet, but I have drives connect to both cards and the performance seems decent from both.
Cons: The only cons is that it makes me spent more $ on storage. I have spent over $5000 worth of hard drives in past 1 year. But it is not a bad thing since now finally I have time to do a total re-organization of my photo and video collections.
Other Thoughts: My past two orders were shipped with same day delivery. Newegg simply rocks.
Pros:
- Up to 16 SATA drives supported
- Good price for the quality and number of ports
Cons:
- Does not come with the SFF-8087 mini-SAS cabling
- Documentation is a little ambiguous for the newbie to LSI products
- Some motherboards the BIOS will override/disable some chipset SATA ports due to boot conflicts -- I had no problems, I disabled the boot functionality of the HBA in the LSI firmware and no issues.
Other Thoughts: Using this card to control drives for a FreeNAS build and it works great with the FreeNAS drivers. Caveat, FreeNAS 9.3.X at the time of this review requires the card to be flashed to version P20 firmware. Flashing this card can be done several ways, and some of the documentation on the Avago (LSI) support site is a bit confusing to someone new to the Avago (LSI) products. A little googling and I had no problems, took about 15 minutes. I did it through the EFI shell and script (downloadable from the Avago website). I would highly recommend this product to anyone who needs a lot of drives for a ZFS file system, particularly FreeNAS -- completely stable.
Pros: LSI products are usually very reliable and well constructed.
Cons: This Adapter will work just fine IF only 3 of the 4 ports have drives attached. However, no matter what I did to try and get it to function in Windows Server 2008 R2 environment, once that 4th drive array cable was attached, it would not boot any further. To bad, since otherwise it seemed OK. I suspect that there was an upper memory conflict with the other hardware reserved space on the computer, and it just couldn't get past it. Incidentally, a pair of HighPoint Rocket (NOT RocketRAID) SGL2720 adapters, with a total of four (4) SATA 3 Ports = 16 drives, did work just fine - so go figure?
Other Thoughts: Newegg accepted a return for this incompatible product for a full refund. So all is well that ends well.
Pros: Inexpensive, No RAID, Just HBA. Works great with FreeNAS. Worked right out of the box, no configuring necessary.
Cons: None, so far.
Other Thoughts: I'd buy another one if I needed it.

Pros: hold 16 Drive cant Complan you can use it for Unraid, xpenology, freenas, XigmaNAS, really any open Source Server Software Came pre Flashed in IT Mode Verison 19 latest is ver 20 you can Flash this card its so simple like 3 Basic Cmd Commands I Tried Dos that Didn't work to well so I just flashed it in CMD in Windows Stupid Simple
Cons: gets very hot when you don't have enough Air Flow for the Chipset 40 mm Fan and 2 Plastic Bolts Fixed this issue if you have good Enough Air Flow you won't have any worries How I Tested this was with my finger and Burnt Fingerprint that's left on the cards heat sink it Hoping the next model has it own heat sink plus fan with a basic 4 pin for power would be amazing
Other Thoughts: I would get another card Don't really need another 1 Thought 16 drive is more than enough for a Basic Home Server
