Simple and easy to set up

Pros: -Works well out of the box for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz (edit: one month in and there is a very noticeable increase in range on the 5GHz band compared to my older router, very happy about that)
-Fantastic performance for the price.
-Works well for up to 10 devices (have not tested more yet...)

Cons: -None so far

Other Thoughts: -Not sure if it is the router itself of the receiving tech, but naming the 2.4 and 5 channels the same SSID causes issues switching between them based on what is faster. Tends to get stuck on one freq. and not change. Easy fix is just having the 2.4 and 5 names differently and manual switching on your receiving device.

Careful of Version 5

Pros: takes up space and comes in a very nice box. The molded cardboard fits the router perfectly and slides neatly into the outside box. The slide clasp on the outside box then keeps the end shut nicely while the router is being returned. I highly recommend this type of packaging.

Cons: Version 5 has fixed antenna instead of the removable one on V4
Version 5 does not work with DD-WRT as opposed to every previous version.
Version 5 is junk and that is what they are selling now and trying to pass off as good as before.

Other Thoughts: sent it back, didn't even look further. Aside from the great hardware, I buy this particular router for 2 reasons. #1 it has removable reverse SMA antenna connections making it suitable for a weather proof box and #2 works with DD-WRT. In one fell swoop, TPLink eliminated the main reasons to buy this router and kept it a secret.

Hi Scott,

Thank you for sharing your experience with our product. While V5 of the Archer C7 does introduce affixed antennas, it also introduces convenient and intuitive enhancements to its management options (web interface and Tether app), allowing for a great user experience.

Please bear in mind our routers are designed and intended for use with our official firmware. Third party firmware compatibility is determined by each respective open source firmware community. We cannot guarantee proper functionality of the router, nor can we provide support for the device if third party firmware is used.

If you would like to create your own third-party or custom firmware, the router's GPL Code is publicly available on our website here: https://www.tp-link.com/us/download/Archer-C7.html#GPL-Code

Our Support Team is always happy to answer any questions you might have about our products. Please feel free to e-mail USSupportTeam@TP-Link.com and we'll gladly have a Support Agent follow up with you directly.

After just two years, frequent ping spikes to the router

Pros: Does what it's supposed to, occasionally when it feels like it

Cons: Horrible ping spikes. Nothing to do with the gateway side of things; just pinging the router IP from a computer shows that there are often periods where ping spikes from 1-2ms to 100-200ms. Upgraded firmware, reset everything, etc. Haven't tried OpenWRT or DD-WRT on it yet, but the stock firmware on this router just somehow doesn't work.

There are many different things that might affect pings to the gateway from a client device. Such as, updates or programs running in the background, active programs, streaming music or movies, basically anything that uses resources. There could could even be interference on the band that is causing the lag between the device and router. Two things you can try if you haven't already. 1. Connect your PC directly to the router via ethernet and test again. This will eliminate in wifi interference. 2. Long into the router and using its diagnostic tools preform pings to the internet. Although this does not have anything to do with pings from a client to the gateway it will should if the link to the internet is having issues.. After these two test you can contact support for further assistance. Call us at 866-225-8139 or email us at support.usa@tp-link.com

Working so far, but v5 is not supported by custom firmwares

Pros: Good wireless range and speed, easy setup. I can run Steam in-house streaming on it while multiple Youtube TV streams are going on, without issues.

Cons: I specifically checked the reviews and Q&As on this product to make sure the seller sold versions prior to v5 before ordering. Contrary to what one might expect from this listing and the other reviews, the seller is selling v5s now. I have not used a consumer router like this for years because software support is always short-lived; I wanted a router that would be compatible with dd-wrt as a fallback when official support ends. Because I received a v5 model, I will not be able to use the custom firmware as I originally planned. Don't buy this if you are expecting to get a hardware revision prior to v5 and/or use custom firmware.

Other Thoughts: Before this product, I've been using a custom router built on an old PC running Linux and an Atheros AR9271 Wireless N adapter. I got very long range with that setup, along the lines of what this product gets, but slower speed (~50mb/s) and some issues with lost fragmentation packets that were probably my own fault (I'm not an iptables/NAT guru). I wanted a system that would be more reliable than my custom solution, but without being totally dependent upon TP-Link to support the product indefinitely. Given that the product I received fails those requirements, I would not buy again.

Works fine, until it doesn't.

Pros: Easy set up, reception is solid.

Cons: After setting this wireless router up on my network I had other devices who intermittently had connection issues, I was able to sort this out through settings adjustments.

After using the unit for 2.5 years I began having an issue where it would drop internet connection regularly for no reason. I updated firmware to the most recent version and did everything I could to troubleshoot and the issue continued getting worse. Finally I contacted TP-Link support and was told that because I'm out of their 2 year warranty service they'll do nothing to help me get a new unit, not a refurbished one, not a discount on a new unit, nothing.

I've had netgear products running for a decade without issue, I feel that 2.5 years is pretty lackluster lifespan for a networking device.

Other Thoughts: Yes, but have a backup plan for when it fails as it seems TP Link doesn't stand by their products for the long haul and will just send you on your way with a proverbial "Too bad, so sad."

Absolute Garbage

Pros: - Worked for a few months

Cons: - Failed within 2 months
- Just stopped turning on after a while

Other Thoughts: The worst part is NewEgg has terrible customer service. They will not refund/replace or take any responsibility for it. After they get the sale they don't care if the item works, as long as it's not within 30 days.
