Fractal Design Define XL Titanium Grey ATX Full Tower Silent PC Computer Case

As the name implies, the Define XL with USB 3.0 is the larger sibling of the acclaimed and award winning Define R2/R3 case. It is focused on low noise levels while also excelling in other important features such as high-performance cooling, expandability and ease of use. The XL combines minimalistic yet elegant styling with extraordinary performance, noise reduction features, premium build quality, and unparalleled value in this price range. This full-tower case is a great choice for everything from gaming/enthusiast systems to silent home theater and corporate applications. The exclusive ModuVent System, 10 hard drive bays with SSD compatibility, sleek black interior, pre-installed noise absorbing materials, six fan slots, unique tilted rear-exhaust 180mm fan, configurable thermal chambers, rotatable/removable HD bays and superior cable management, are just some of features that put the R3 in a class by itself.

Highlights

Fractal Design Define
  • High density noise-reducing material for an optimal silent case
  • Patented ModuVent™ design allowing the user to choose between optimal silence or maximum airflow.
  • With a new internal layout and additional PCI expansion slots, it can harbor the most powerful enthusiast systems.
  • Both HDD cages can be removed or repositioned - Top HDD cage can be removed or repositioned for increased airflow whereas bottom HDD cage can be repositioned further into the case to allow for front radiator mount.
  • The case can fit water cooling equipment in the front, top, rear and bottom without major modifications.
  • Three-speed fan controller is strategically integrated in the front panel and supports up to 3 fans
  • Three Silent Series R2 fans are included, featuring hydraulic bearings which contribute to a longer life expectancy – Silent Series R2 retail fans now come standard in all cases
  • New tool-less front fan holder makes switching front fans a breeze

Features

Fractal Design Define

The Define XL is pre-fitted with dense noise absorbing bitumen material. This material effectively absorbs noise generated by the components and fans inside. The sleek top panel has no holes, to also help reduce noise. Instead of putting a fan on the top cover, a 180mm fan is mounted inside near the top at an optimized angle, to blow out air in the rear and further reduce any noise generated by the fan. The side panel has a removable cover, called ModuVent , which also contains noise absorbing material and can be removed to further enhance the air flow characteristics by mounting an additional intake fan in the side panel.

Fractal Design Define

The case has three chambers, which can easily be reconfigured in multiple ways to change and optimize the way airflows through the case. If desired, the XL can support up to seven fans and provide airflow from three sides of the case. The cleverly designed, 10 white HDD trays can be used for 3.5” HDDs or SSDs and the rubber mounting grommets further reduce noise in the system. The spacious chassis can support long graphic cards up to 330mm (or 480mm if the upper HDD cage is removed). The case also includes several rubber grommeted routing holes and extended cable space behind the M/B mounting plate which allow for efficient cable management. The bottom of the case has a filter over the power supply which can be easily removed for cleaning. It's easy to see why this case has won so many awards - the attention to detail, clever design, high-performance features, understated yet elegant style, quality workmanship, and unparalleled value, put the Define XL in a class of its own.

awesome design

Pros: sturdy as a brick house, all the space you need, vents very well, quality built, quality steel, comes with some fans. quiet!!!

Cons: not very pretty, and not a con to me, but some may see it as one - this puppy is HEAVY - other side of being so sturdy and solid.

Other Thoughts: would buy this again

Great Case

Pros: Very sturdy with enough room to house all of your components. Great quality for the price.

Cons: None that I can think of.

Other Thoughts: The box it came in was dinged up quite a bit but the case was not damaged in any way.

Ordered Grey got the Black

Pros: It's massive. Enough room for, well, everything. Very quiet fans pre-installed.

Cons: Just that I ordered Grey and got black.. but it's already all setup and running, and I don't want to return it. I can live with black.
It would be nice if there where more grommets around the top of the motherboard, my OCZ 8 pin cpu cable wasn't long enough to go around the back.

Other Thoughts: Nice.

Very Solid and Silent Case!!!

Pros: -Very sturdy (this thing feels ultra solid)
-Sound baffling on side panels
-Its very quiet
-Lots of space for HDD, motherboard and graphics card
-It looks great, very slick

Cons: -As noted before the the power supply area is not set up great. The hole for the cables is not quite in the right spot and the feet that the power supply sit seem to be in a strange place.
-If you do put in a huge graphics card, you will lose 4 HDD bays. But you have the choice which is nice.

Other Thoughts: -This thing is HEAVY!! so just don't expect to be carrying it around to much
-The case is big. And a couple of my cables just barely made it through. Don't be surprised if you have to go out and pick up some extenders.
-I added another fan into the HDD bay area to help cool my drives.

best case to date!

Pros: After looking around for a month trying to find that 'perfect server case', i found it. Last year, while in Germany, I was looking at local computer shops here and there trying to find a case that would fit the bill of having massive amounts of drive space, goodly amount of motherboard work area, and that would take in a full length RAID controller card, all keeping airflow to the utmost maximum. Most cases only offered 2 to 5 drive 3.5" bays. On the offhand of stopping by a local shop on the perfect day, I found this gem! although skeptical at the time, i purchased it for the exorbitant amount that they were asking for. I am never looking back! Completely worth the 170 Euro! After slamming in 10 2TB drives, micro ATX mainboard with the full size RAID controller card, slapping on 16GB RAM and a hex core AMD processor, this thing turned out to be a great beast!

Cons: OK, as far as cons go, there are a few.
1) case material is pretty thin steel in areas, so be careful not to bend it too much.
2) the fitting around the power supply bends when too much pressure is applied, killing the airflow if set up as suction (vacuum).
3) this thing is HEAVY (although this wouldn't be a con if not needed to be moved often)
4) the front fans are a PITA to get to and the filters to clean. It takes a good 20 minutes turnaround to pull out the front plastic clips, clean and replace. Not too bad, but I have seen better setups than this
5) although not a con to me, it might be to some: lack of dedicated HDD access light OR power light (the LED ring around power button could be used for either one, although the cable has PWR LED printed on the connector). I personally have it plugged up as a HDD indicator, since I already know it's on since I am logged into it via SSH or RSH.
6) SMALL reset button behind door. Most people wouldn't even see it!

Other Thoughts: Even with 10 hard drives, a 650 Watt PSU, a RAID controler chip that gets REALLY hot (RocketRaid, BTW) and compiling source code Gentoo linux installation for hours on end, this puppy stays at a nice 38C mainboard temp, 47C CPU temp. The drives are set to always on, and the fans are set to the lowest settings of about 450 to 600 RPMs. It stays whisper quiet that, even in my silent study room, my friends were amazed that there was a RAID 6 server sitting five feet from them (it's covered with an end table over top of it to better hide the physical aspect).

All in all, I am very happy with my purchase and would be willing to pay it again if need be.

Love this case

Pros: Spacious and nicely compartmentalized. Sound dampening made a world of difference. Plenty of air flow and easy access to drive bays. Convenient holes for cable routing.

Cons: None

Couple of glitches but great overall

Pros: Just completed my build using the Fractal Design Define XL and am ultimately pleased with the result. I think I made the right choice of case. If I were to do it again, I would go with the same. The case is very solid – the side panels are pretty heavy and acoustically padded. The design is heavy on screws so that seems a bit of a step back on previous cases I have used but I will give them the benefit of the doubt and venture that this was a design choice made to minimize case noise on the basis that crewless assemblies are more prone to rattle. Not a huge issue, they use thumb screws where possible which makes it relatively easy. Plenty of room inside to fit all my components on an ATX board. I removed the drive bay in the main section of the case for better ventilation but could have left it in there and still comfortably fit my GTX690. Overall build quality is top notch. All the parts fit in very easily. Great value for money.

Cons: They only provided 4 SSD of the screws necessary to attach an SSD to a drive bay. Therefore, if you are buying more than one SSD drive, you want to make sure you don’t get the bare OEM version, or be sure to stock up on the right screws. Otherwise, you’ll be making an unplanned trip down to the local hardware store.

The big let-down: The cable routing hole from the PSU section into the back section of the case is too far towards the back of the case and not even remotely wide enough. Anyone who is using this case with one of the larger PSUs around will have a very hard time routing the PSU cables into the cable space as the PSU will cover at least 50% of the hole. That’s a pretty big oversight. The PSU space is designed for large PSUs – and I figure most buyers will want to use one given that this is a full tower. I had to cut the case pannel to route my cables. That's going to cost them an egg. Have a dremel handy if you are looking at this case with a large PSU.

Other Thoughts: One more thing that I worried about before I started on the build: the Intel BXRTS2011LC – liquid CPU cooler fits just fine without any mods necessary. The 140mm fan emplacement at the back of the case also includes screw holes for 120mm fans so the cooler can fit just fine there with no drilling or washers required.

The final word is that it’s whisper quiet. I’m really impressed. I dumped out the stock 140mm fans which look pretty flimsy and replaced them with two Antec Truequiet 140mm fans. I left in the top 180mm fan as that one doesn’t make much in the way of noise. As above, using an Intel BXRTS2011LC – liquid CPU cooler. I haven’t stressed the GPU yet but so far, I can hardly tell the computer is on which is why I am sold on the Define XL.
