Edwin E update

Pros: Same as original review

Cons: Same as original review

Other Thoughts: I had the time to see what was up with the constant fan buzz. Upon disassembly I found out why the fan became noisy after a short time. It sits loosely in a plastic channel - no screws, no rubber mounts. No fan is 100% perfectly balanced and will at some point vibrate if not firmly secured to some solid surface, at least lightly pinched, or isolated from the surrounding surfaces by a cushion of some sort. I put two small squares of very thin foam rubber on the upper corners of the fan, reassembled -- fan buzz gone. The foam rubber pinches the fan downward into the channel for a tighter fit and also acts like a vibration absorber. The metal center top rear of the unit has a very slight bow now (because it's pressing down on the foam rubber), but it presents no cosmetic or performance problems. Do yourself a favor and do something like this before you install it the first time. BTW - remove all four trays before removing the eight side screws. This rack would have earned 5 stars from me had the fan been secured with four screws through the rear panel.

Works great but fan issues

Pros: Easy to install. Makes drive swapping a snap. I have had no problems with either SSDs or HDDs seating. One advantage I like with any external rack is the ability to remove my drives while on vacation. If someone steals the computer, at least they don't get my personal data.

Cons: The fan WAS a great asset until the last few days. Monitoring the drive temps clearly indicated they stayed below 100 F unless pushed hard. I've used the rack for exactly 6 weeks now, and as of two days ago the fan began to squeal. The squeal was only a few seconds long initially but got longer and longer with each restart or wake from sleep. It has now become a non-stop buzz. I think the days are numbered for the fan. I have not as of yet pulled the rack to see if a replacement job is even doable. Is the fan soldered in or does it use a standard male/female pin and plug system -- don't know yet. I may just wait until the end comes and monitor drive temps to see if I can live without what has been thus far a great means of keeping the drives VERY cool.

Other Thoughts: I really like this rack but am disappointed with the early fan issue. If you decide to proceed with a purchase, just know that the great fan you start with may fail early and buzz all the way to the grave.

It Works! It's Cheap!

Pros: I used 4 120GB SSDs of 2 different brands. Works just fine, once installed. Doesn't seem to have any affect on drive performance vs. not using the enclosure.

Cons: As noted by others: no activity indicator per drive, just a "master" indicator for the entire enclosure. LEDs are "blindingly" bright, especially the 4 green power LEDs. Inserting drives is a bit dicey; you need to "feel" for the connector when inserting the sled into the enclosure. No keylock for the sleds. BUT this is an not a high-end device, and is definitely worth the price.

Other Thoughts: For an inexpensive enclosure, this seems to work great. I worry about the quality of the fan in the enclosure; it doesn't seem very easy to get to if it craps out. But with SSDs I'm not quite as worried as I would be with mechanical disks overheating (maybe I should be..).

This Hot Swap Bay SUCKS!

Pros: It works. Just not very well.

Cons: I put this in a server where I ran an 8 disk raid 10 because they were out of the iStarUSA ones everywhere. This increased the average IO of my disks by over 10ms per request!

Also the trays are really hard to put in correctly if you mount this bay upside down. My molex power cable wouldn't reach all the way across the server - the power input is on the wrong side of this bay.

Good value and convenience

Pros: As a person with muliple ssds and laptop hdds floating about, this was almost a necessity. Formatting/imaging/backups have all been super fast, and I'm very satified so far. I setup software striping on 4 random ssds in windows and got over 600 MB/s sequential read on AS SSD. Mind you, my mobo only supports Sata2. I'm sure you could top 800MB/s with real RAID.

Cons: There is only 1 activity LED for all four drives, I would've liked to seen individual activity LEDs for each drive. There is a power led for all 4. My Win7 had issues with hotswapping, had to reboot to see all the drives again. No fault of the enlosure, but just a note. I wouldn't expect server level of hot-swappability, I'm used to dell 2950s and such.

Other Thoughts: I didn't get that satisfied feeling when I seated my drives. It didn't seem like I had even reached the connector yet. But I'm very happy so far and will update this if problems arise.
