ATX-size with Fast SLI Graphics. No need to use a big server tower.

Pros: I couldn't get Ubuntu or Vista Ultimate x64 to load with 16 Gigs of Kingston RAM. I brought it down to 8 Gigs of RAM, and every OS loaded smoothly with no problems. The sockets are close to each other, but I'm using two "giant" Scythe Ninja heatsinks with two "quiet" 120mm Zalman fans. I have the motherboard inside a Lian Li PC-A71B full tower, and that leaves plenty of room for cables and hardware! I had problems starting the ASUS KFN32-D SLI/SAS but this mobo booted right up! I'm using a modified BFG Tech 8800 Ultra with a Thermalright Xtreme HR-03 CPU Cooler. There are only small visible areas of the motherboard. ATX format is compact for a server chassis. The video graphics are fast and responsive on this board. I'm using two AMD Opteron 2220 2.8Ghz processors. Wow, ...this computer is fast!

Cons: Had to modify the Scythe Ninja fastening hardware to make a pair (bent one swivel handle about 40 degrees. Fits like a glove! Doesn't use "expensive" Shanghai processors (45nm).

Other Thoughts: The Shanghai version of this board is found at MNPC Tech. It's called the ASUS KFNS5-D SLI. Newegg carries higher versions of the ASUS KFN series mobo. I think I'm going to get the Shanghai version? Yeah!!!

Good Barcelona Qad Core Board

Pros: This is a good solid motherboard for Barcelona Quad Core processors. Had very few problems getting it set up. Like the layout for cables, worked well with my case. Very stable, no problems yet. Tones of sata ports, plenty of usb ports, good heatsink mounts. SLI on a reasonably priced server board, oh ya.

Cons: No support for Shanghai Opteron processors. That's right, there is no support for them, and in talking to Asus Tech, either none is planned for, or the board is simply incapable. I couldn't get a straight answer.
Card, CPU and ram layout. Ram is too close to the CPU's so if you are using a large heatsink, keep in mind you may have to modify. They could have alotted for a few more expansion slots, but hey, with onboard everything, you don't need much expansion.
Had to flash the Bios to get it to work with 8346 processors. Asus does not list them as supported, but they work. Will be switchin over to 2352's soon anyway, so no big deal.

Other Thoughts: Chipset (northbridge) gets hot. No fan is supplied and with the location of the chip directly behind the expansion slots, there is no room for one. It sould have been located further back or further up the board. I haven't had an overheating problem yet, but then, I haven't pushed it all the way to it's limits yet. We'll see.

Quad-Core Ready??? Shanghai 2378

Pros: Is This ready for Shanghai QuadCore 2378 processors? I have 2212's but they're slow. Please, if someone knows, post the answer.

Cons: If it doesn't handle Quad Cores then it will be a point against it.

Other Thoughts: I wonder if somebody will answer my questions. Sometimes I just wonder ...... all by myself with chips and bytes and bits alike.

Manufacturer Response:
Dear Valued Customer,

Our KFN5-D server board can support Barcelona quad core processors but not Shanghai quad core processors. If you need further assistance, please contact our Technical Support Department at http://vip.asus.com/eservice/techserv.aspx and reference case number "NE293674".

great board until I updated the BIOS

Pros: Removable BIOS chip
Great Linux support in RHEL / CentOS
Rock stable performer

Cons: "RAID" drivers are in Win only, Linux requires MWADM software raid
Updating from the 20x BIOS to the 402 or 404 BIOS resulted in the second SATA controller no longer being functional. :(

Other Thoughts: This board worked great with a pair of Opteron 8220 procs for over a year. When I went to upgrade to a pair of 4 core 65nm opterons I needed to update to the 404 BIOS which resulted in the 2nd SIL SATA controller no longer working, resulting in a server that fails to POST if both SATA controllers are enabled!

Still fighting with the box, and will try a PCI-X SATA II controller card to get the box back online, but that SERIOUSLY sucks if you intent to use the new Opteron parts on this (otherwise terrific) server board.

good board

Pros: I just finished 3 weeks of messing around with 3 Tyan boards that would only turn on 1 out of 10 times.

So I went ahead and ordered this board. What a reliev.
I installed my 2220 SE and 8GB of DDR2 667 Reg Ecc and loaded Vista 64 without a hitch. Well almost. Vista still has a few bugs to work out.

The board also worked right away with my High Point 2310 Raid card and that was impressive, as non of the darn Tyan boards can do that. Tyan is really getting on my nerves and their support sucks.

Maybe it was just me, but 3 boards. Anyway, I think you will like this board.

Cons: Bad layout on some of the cables and the chipset heatsink gets a bit hot. Had to flash bios to latest version.

Other Thoughts: I will buy more as I have some more AMD processors from the Tyan build. Oh yeah, did I say Tyan sucks. (S2915 to be specific)

KFN5-D SLI

Pros: Powerful, stable

Cons: Picky about RAM; NVidia RAID can make Linux install tricky

Other Thoughts: I've been running this for about 6 months now in our office, and since we got it going, it's been extremely reliable, fast, and has been supporting ten xen virtual hosts with no sweat. We had some trouble getting it installed, since there was some weirdness with the BIOS RAID and Linux compatibility issues when installing Fedora; once we got around these, though, and Fedora was installed, no problems at all. The big problem we're facing right now is finding memory that will work. We bought some Kingston KVR667D2E5/2G DIMMs. These are not on the official compatibility list for the motherboard, but they're very similar to others. The DIMMs don't work at all. The Asus support site is very difficult to find information about this board; in many menus, they don't list Socket F as an option, so while the manual and drivers are there, other things aren't (forums!!!, any way to fill out a help request, etc.). This is extremely frustrating. Be sure you know what you're doing.

Nice board

Pros: Lots of Sata & USB ports. Taking system check at post is really helpfull. Works like is is supposed to. Included driver diask also has a more recent bios update. All nessessary drivers worked well in Windows SBS Server 2003.

Cons: Can be a real tight squeeze if you don't get a big case. I highly recommend a full ATX tower or specific server case that can handle the gynourmousness size of this board and the cpu layout. I had to remove the heatsink on cpu 1 to get my hard drive cage back in place.

Other Thoughts: Board comes with the 3.5 pitch mount installed but also has the brackets for standard AM2/939/754 heatsinks. The board worked great for me. I only gave it for out of 5 because I thought Asus could have done a slightly better job at the placement of the cpu sockets and the southbridge heatsink. But it really wasn't to large of an issue. Most graphics card will sit over the southbridge heatsink and it shouldn't interfer with anything.
