5 Years Running

Pros: Excellent performance and moderate fan speed / noise. Stock fans are generally equal to if not louder than this card. I used this card on its own for several years, overclocked when needed or just tinkering, without the chance of testing the benefits of crossfire capabilities.

Cons: A bit pricey when purchased. Without the proper attachments, depending on your computer case orientation, this card may only fit upside down without expansion bracers causing it to practically hang off the motherboard. At first this concerned me a great deal, but it turned out to be a minor aesthetic annoyance rather than any danger or performance complication. Might want to avoid the use of Cooler Master cases or Asus motherboards with this particular card if this concerns you.

Other Thoughts: This card was a hard buy for my first custom PC, but overall I'm satisfied. I don't understand those who have difficulties with this video card or what they're doing to make them fail, but mine has never had a problem. Dirt was the main cause of spontaneous shutdowns and BSOD, but anyone who owns / builds PCs knows this. Sucking out all the dirt from my video card (and the rest of the PC) easily extended the life of both exponentially. Plays every game on maximum/ultra settings to this day, without a foreseeable need to upgrade until next year.

No thank you.

Pros: Ran great for a little while. Decent upgrade from my GTX260

Cons: Man where do I begin. I had multiple BSOD's with many different configurations of this card. I tried rolling back the drivers multiple times, switching to a different express slot, tried it in multiple computers and all had the same issue. BSODs occured 20 minutes to an hour into what ever game I played, and sometimes occurred while watching movies.

While playing I noted the card was very quite. Upon inspecting Catalyst Control Center I noted the fan speed was set to 50% and to automatically turn up the speed if the card ever hit 50c. While playing games with GPUZ in the background I noted that the fan controller wasn't doing this. I had to switch to manual mode every time and then crank up the fan speed myself. When you turn the fan up past 70%, It turns into a jet engine. By far it was the loudest video card I ever owned. Unfortunately 70% wasn't enough to stop the card from getting up to 70c, which would also typically cause a BSOD.

Other Thoughts: Would not recommend, not that anyone should be buying this card at this date anyways.

Full of surprises

Pros: -Can still run many modern games maxed at 1080p, most that it can't will do fine on high (this is 2 and a half years after I got the card)
-Runs cool, never saw it go into dangerous temperature range

Cons: -not really a con since I got more than my money's worth, but slightly expensive when I got it. A 7850 can beat it at stock these days and won't hurt your wallet as much as this card did back when this was released

Other Thoughts: Surprised how amazing this XFX card is, i've heard some good things but far more horror stories with the brand. I wouldn't be afraid to go with an XFX card again, chose them at the time because of their warranty.

Back when XFX was good

Pros: Good performance in 2012-2013 games

Not too loud

Very reliable never had a problem with this card

Good temperatures

Over clocks somewhat well

BF3 with medium settings at 1080p 55 avg frames

metro 2033 on medium settings avg 45frames

Shogun Total war high/Medium settings 55-60fps

Heaven benchmark 3.0 with everything maxed out and tesselation on normal 25fps which is dman good for a 3 year old 300$ card.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Man i live my 5850 i have it for 3 years now and i have to say its been the best graphic card i have ever bought never had any issues with it. I have recently purchased a 7970 BE DD from XFX and had to return it a day later because hte manufacturer overclock was crashing every game it was just unstable. That inspired me to write a review about my good old 5850.

Poorly designed?

Comments: As mentioned, this card suffers from the GSOD, and after some Googling, it seems to be a known issue with the 5xxx series. I'm sure many never encounter the problem, and I call them lucky. But for me and everyone else who have been suffering from this, it's irritating to the max.

I do love this card though, because when it works, it works GREAT! But having to RMA almost 4 cards now in a years time, just isn't worth it to me anymore. :[
And no, it's not a PSU problem as I have a 750w Antec and proper cooling in my case.
