External docking stations are popular because of its flexibility and compatibility. However, because it is for external use, the interface limits the transfer speed of your hard drive while only allowing one to be use at a time. In a standard computer case, there are several 5.25" bays usually reserved for your DVD ROM drive, however, will not naturally fit with your 2.5" or 3.5" hard drives without some assistance. We also want to create a much faster and smoother transition from external to internal setups. Using the MB971SP-B DuoSwap, you will save precious desktop space by integrating both 3.5" & 2.5" slots into a single 5.25" bay. This gives you the ability to expand and easily go from your external docking station to your computer in just seconds.

Does what I need it to. . .

Pros: Individual power and eject buttons for each drive.
Allows me to plug in an internal drive for maintenance or formatting.
Dual size form factors for max flexibility with the bay space that I have.

Cons: Eject buttons seem to take more force that I want to put on them. (Am I going to break them? Keep pushing and find out.)

Other Thoughts: If you have a mid-tower or full-tower, a good option. Probably better going with a disc drive in a mini-tower, and using an external enclosure or docking bay if you need it.

Manufacturer Response:
Hello Brian,

Thank you for your review, and I'm sorry you've found the button presses to be difficult. Due to the open nature of this model, and the fact that it is installed on the front of computer cases, the clearances are left a little tight to ensure that drives do not fall out during ejection. This could damage drives and potentially lead to data loss. The security of our users data is our number 1 priority, and we made this design decision to reflect that. That being said, I will forward this to our design team and let them know you found the button press too heavy, this will help us design our products in the future.

If you have any questions about this, please do not hesitate to contact us at tech@icydock.com

Thank you again for your review,

Great For Hassle-Free Backups

Pros: This is my third unit in as many years - not replacements, but simply adding additional units. I have two full tower setups in my home office - one for general computing and the other for video editing. Both systems employ large RAID mirrors and both systems have these bays to perform backups to external drives (I like them so much I added a second unit to one PC so that I could make quick transfers between external drives.)

The build quality is very good for the price point and the ejection mechanism is quite smooth

Cons: The clearances of the bay that accepts 3.5-inch drives is very tight and tends to bind when inserting or extracting drives because metal-to-metal surfaces. A design change that included nylon gliders to eliminate binding would be most welcome

Other Thoughts: Recommended and would buy again

Good design, needs improvements to be great

Pros: - Quick drive removal (after removing covers)
- Independent power buttons

Cons: - Bay covers get caught on drives
- Drives take quite a bit of force to eject
- Wire insulation cracking

Other Thoughts: I tried several hot-swap caddies before I found this one; for my use case it is by far the best design. I use two of these bays several times a week to make images of customer hard drives before working on their PCs. If you will be using these caddies a lot, take the face off and remove the bay covers. Drives will get caught on them, making it hard to remove the drive. The 2.5" bay cover on one of my original caddies broke free from the mounting point on one side, which made it nearly impossible to remove the drive. While they don't look as good with the covers removed, it fixes my only major issue.

One of my original two units was DOA (no power), but Newegg replaced it without any hassles. The replacement unit had an issue with the insulation cracking and exposing the wires for the 2.5" bay, but it works so I didn't bother sending it back for another one. My original unit doesn't have this issue, so it might be an isolated problem.

Even with the various issues, I still think this is one of the best HDD caddies for people who swap drives a lot. Do yourself a favor and remove the bay covers, it makes a huge difference in the usability of these caddies.

Just what I was looking for

Pros: Does what it is suppose to do.
Powers drives just fine.
Windows 10 detects drives just fine.

Cons: The ejector arm will swing over a SSD if the SSD is too thin. This means you will not be able to eject the SSD and you will need to pull it out yourself. It would have been nice if the ejector arm was designed differently. I have a Samsung EVO which is so thin, the ejection arm just slides across the top of it without ejecting the drive. Buy thick SSD's to use with this. Knocking off one star because it will not eject all SSD's from the bay.

Easy Install

Pros: I got this because I wanted to make backups quickly that I could store off-site. As you can see it accepts both popular drive sizes. No software needed. You may need to boot into your BIOS to enable hot swap.

Cons: Minimal directions.

Other Thoughts: Somehow I missed that there is a button to select either the 3 1/2" or 2 1/2" drive. So you can only access one of the drives at a time even though the unit holds the two drives simultaneously.

Manufacturer Response:
Hello Donald,

This model can actually connect both the 2.5" and 3.5" drive at the same time. To do this, you will have to make sure both SATA cables are connected, and both power buttons are turned on. There is no switch between the 2.5" and 3.5", just make sure that both LEDs are on and both drives will be powered and connected simultaneously.

You can find the product manual as a PDF in the link below, with instructions on how to connect everything.

It worked ONE time!!!!!

Pros: I wish I could think of just one!!!!!

Cons: This piece of trash relieved me of my cash and worked one time.
Gaaaa!!!!!! Is there on quality control anymore?????

Other Thoughts: To be fair the 2.5 portion seems to still work but the 3.5" drive dock does not recognize any drive inserted.
This is installed in a 19" Ryzen 1700 Rack computer I use for data recovery and MISC tasks. It is a ROYAL pain to get this thing installed in my 4U chassis!!!! So much so, I will likely never buy another internal drive dock for it. I will use external ones from now on and they WON"T be by "Icy Dock". What a piece of garbage!!!!

Manufacturer Response:
Hello Thomas,

I'm sorry you've had one of the bays go out on your dock. Please contact us directly at tech@icydock.com, and I will make sure we get this resolved for you. Your unit, as with all our products, is backed by a full 3-year warranty against all defects, and we can have this fixed for you quickly. I will include our contact page down below, where you can also find support options via phone and live web-chat.

I understand your mistrust of our products, but if reliability is your number one concern, I would recommend you stay with an internal unit, rather than an external one. Even if you do go with another brand, internal units have fewer points of failure, and generally last much longer than a unit that connects via USB, Thunderbolt, eSATA, or similar connection types.

Easy install and setup. No loss of speed on HDD.

Pros: This is exactly what I was looking for. Super easy to mount in bay, plug in cables, changed BIOS settings to hot swap enabled, and it works great.
The power buttons and eject buttons work as they should. Green power light and amber "in use" light work.
I did a disk read/write test for both 2.5"HDD and 3.5"HDD, tested both in hot swap bay and plugged straight to MOBO, no loss of speed in this docks's connections.
The flat black color matches most other flat blacks; looks great in my case.

Cons: Having only one 2.5 bay, it wouldn't make cloning a 2.5 to a 2.5 any easier, in case you're upgrading your laptop; but generally I recommend clean installs anyways, i've never wanted to clone a disk, so is not a Con for me. If you're looking for easy Cloning, pick a different product.
The user manual was a couple of nonhelpful pictures; but if you're the kind of person buying this, i presume you can figure out installing. Just remember which SATA ports you're plugging into on MOBO and enable hot swap in the BIOS.

Other Thoughts: I would highly recommend.

Manufacturer Response:
Hello Nicholas,

If you ever want to install a 2.5" drive in the top 3.5" bay, consider one of our converters, linked below. Each of them take a 2.5" drive and give it the exact same dimensions and port locations as a 3.5" drive.

Works better than anticipated

Pros: Truly plug & play. No issues on my Windows 10 Home / ASUS MB / AMD system. Make sure your SATA configuration is set to "External SATA Ports" (or something similar) in your BIOS for the 2 SATA ports used by this device. After that, you can boot with either the 3.5", 2.5" or both SATA drives powered on or not. If they are powered on after boot, they are immediately recognized by the system. Although you do not have an "Eject" option in File Manager, clicking on the Removable Hardware icon in the system tray does give you the option to select and dismount the device, just like it would for a USB removable device. Swap, use, repeat. Couldn't be easier. I think this option works better than an external SATA docking station hooked up to USB 3.0 ports.

Cons: None, operational. Including 2 SATA data cables would be nice. A few design enhancements. 1st, the drive cover doors should be independent of each other. As it is now, if you have a 3.5" drive inserted, the 2.5" drive slot is open instead of covered. 2nd, the rear SATA ports should be side by side instead of vertical. That way you can use right angle SATA cables instead of being restricted to inline cables.
