The only thing more amazing than our technology is what you'll do with it.
Pros: Low power draw, 3.6ghz Turbo performance, runs incredibly cool.
Cons: What's not to like!
Other Thoughts: I chose this for a purpose-built digital audio workstation computer that needs stability and cpu performance at high levels. I am totally happy with this purchase!
Pros: This CPU is a four core LGA1155 socket and I use it with 14 GB of ram for video editing. I bought the computer used 2 years ago and run two HP 2TB Black drives, plus an SSD 250GB boot drive. The SSD really makes the booting and video rendering times much faster under the original Windows 7 OS (until delays mentioned below). Once the SSD was added along with an older GTX 750 Ti graphics card, the Windows 7 "Experience rating" was almost at the top. I am able to run 3 monitors with the graphics card, and leave the system on 24/7. I am not a gamer, so I don't know how it would work with gaming, which is more dependent on expensive GPU cards.
Cons:
However, a 7-year old CPU, slower DDR3 Ram and proprietary HP motherboard prevent upgrading or add on coolers, so I am moving on to the latest Intel i7-8700k CPU, ASUS Z370 series motherboard with onboard M.2 PCIe SSD which will be four times faster than my existing SSD and make video editing and rendering even faster. I will use this older system for video uploading chores and perhaps a backup RAID system. It has been a good workhorse.
Another con is I want to get away from an HP proprietary system since this system replaced an earlier HP where the motherboard failed. Using standard "build" components means I can always find replacements or upgrades since specs of after market components stay consistent.
Another issue is my system, which may be the motherboard, doesn't reboot easily, remaining with a black screen for 5+ minutes, and I don't know if that is the CPU, the GPU or motherboard that is causing the boot delay. AND, the proprietary HP motherboard has oddball CPU fastening specs, so I can't buy known, reliable coolers to upgrade the cooling. Thus the issue isn't the Intel CPU so much as the HP platform. Additionally the newest 8th Gen Intel CPU's have SIX cores (not four) and TWELVE threads which are very good to have for video editing.
Other Thoughts: There are only two CPU brands to consider. Intel or AMD. AMD has produced new, faster CPU tech that caused Intel to upgrade theirs, but I am sticking with Intel. The i5 is the middle of the i3, i5 and i7 range, and is still a good performer for most home computers, whether this older CPU or the latest i5. If you read this far, I suggest finding YouTube videos on how to build your own computer (Carey Holzman is good), then use PCpartspicker to select the parts, buy from Newegg (usually same price as the other guys, but no state sales tax), and BUILD it!!.
Pros: None
Cons: Did not work.
Pros:
(EDIT) Yes my CPU is still doing great! But I want to make issue with this CPU being sold by NothingButSavings for $309! This is a CPU from 2012/2013! And when I bought it back in mid 2014 it only cost me $179. When this CPU was brand new in late 2012 it only cost $190! So why is NothingButSavings selling a dated 3rd gen i5 for $309? Stay away from NothingButSavings! Newegg needs to stop allowing questionable vendors use their site! This is why I stopped using Newegg!
It's fast and very powerful at stock speeds. Goes perfect with my R9 270. I had a i5 750 lynnfield chip running my rig before this one, And the temps on the i5 3470 is so much better. I am using just the stock cooler and it idles in the 30's and does not go past 58c under load. The old i5 750 would get past 80c under load. So there is a big improvement in temps with this chip over previous gen i5's. Also the performance of the i5 3470 is a massive improvement over my old i5 750.
Cons: Well I can't think of any big cons except the multiplier being limited to x40, But honestly it is still able to be overclocked decently.
Other Thoughts: Well in my opinion this is the perfect gaming processor. It holds it's own against all other processor's and you never need to take it past stock speed. It is not the fastest or the newest on the market. But it is a very respectable High end processor. And it should satisfy most enthusiasts.
Pros:
- Included graphics.
- FAST.
Cons: - No hyper threading.
Other Thoughts: I would recommend this processor for anyone on a budget. This processor comes with graphics. This should be suitable for most "work computers" (so to speak). Don't buy a graphics card and instead put your money towards this processor. Graphics included. I used this on a "budget PC".
Pros:
Very fast.
Great performance to power ratio.
Multitasking is a breeze.
4 Physical cores as opposed to 2 physical and 2 logical.
Handles Games like a breeze with the right video card.
Cons: Poor integrated Graphics.
Other Thoughts: Definitely was the choice back in the day. Even uses less power than today's i5s, but the IGPU takes a hit because of it. Have one in circulation as a server and it is still running. If you can snag a used one either in a refurbished workstation or stand alone, I would recommend grabbing it.
Pros: runs cool and quiet, its very fast
Cons: not able to overclock
Other Thoughts: upgraded from a amd fx6100 to this i5 and could not be more happy. wish I would of got the K version however this runs every game at fast frames

Pros: -Good speed for most tasks
Cons: -Wish it was hyperthreaded
Other Thoughts: Used this for 2 years, then upgraded it to an i5-3570K for overclocking
