Intel Core i7-5820K Haswell-E 6-Core Desktop Processor
Punch up the power in everything you do with the Intel Core i7-5820K Desktop Processor. It delivers significant improvement in performance over previous generation processors, resulting in great system performance and responsiveness, strong security, and exceptional virtualization capability.
No-holds-barred Processor Capabilities
The 5th Gen Intel Core i7-5820K Haswell-E processor gives you the performance you need to create and think out of the box. It has up to six cores, and features a dedicated 6 x 256KB KB L2 cache. It runs at a base frequency of 3.3GHz, and can be accelerated to 3.6 GHz, thanks to Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0. Intel Hyper-Threading Technology uses resources efficiently, enabling multiple threads to run on each core and increasing processor throughput. Now, you can run multi-threaded applications with noticeably fast speed, and perform multiple tasks with astounding responsiveness and smoothness.
Robust Security
Start up your system safely. The Intel Core i7-5820K Haswell-E processor employs advanced security technologies – including Intel Identity Protection Technology, Intel Data Protection Technology (Intel AES New Instructions), and Execute Disable Bit Technology – to ensure maximum security.
Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology
Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology is an advanced means of enabling high performance while meeting the power-conservation needs of mobile systems. Conventional Intel SpeedStep Technology switches both voltage and frequency in tandem between high and low levels in response to processor load. Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology builds upon that architecture using design strategies such as Separation between Voltage and Frequency Changes, and Clock Partitioning and Recovery.
Thermal Monitoring Technologies
Thermal Monitoring Technologies protect the processor package and the system from thermal failure through several thermal management features. An on-die Digital Thermal Sensor (DTS) detects the core's temperature, and the thermal management features reduce package power consumption and thereby temperature when required in order to remain within normal operating limits
Intel Virtualization Technology
Intel Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O (VT-d) continues from the existing support for IA-32 (VT-x) and Itanium processor (VT-i) virtualization adding new support for I/O-device virtualization. Intel VT-d can help end users improve security and reliability of the systems and also improve performance of I/O devices in virtualized environments.
Pros:
-Overclocked this bad boy to 4.5ghz with an air cooler and has been running strong since I got this back in 2015.
-6 cores and 12 threads allow multitasking, instead of the plain 4 cores.
-Great for not only multitasking but gaming! I get 160fps with a gtx 1070 on Rainbow Six Seige, 300 in Rocket League, 300 in CSGO all on max or ultra settings. Other games like GTA V or Tomb Raider I got 60+ fps max settings. Incredible!
Cons: -Now since the i7-8700k, this CPU is definitely not in its former state. It is outperformed in everything by coffee lake, even the price. But, this is still a great CPU and if you have this CPU just know that you have a beast. Especially if you overclock this guy to 4.0ghz or more, you should be outperforming the i7-8700k. Anyway, don't buy this CPU settle for the i7-8700k because it's much better.
Pros: it runs
Cons: none
Pros:
While 6 cores 12 threads is still not necessary for gaming. the multi tasking is great.
It has been running for years @ 4.4 Ghz at stock voltage
Cons: none so far
Other Thoughts: If you are looking for pure gaming performance the x99 platform isn't for you. get the 6700K/7700K for that high clock speed and instructions per clock performance.
Pros:
-Very fast, 6 physical cores helps run a lot at once
-Overclocked to 4GHz (ASRock Extreme4 X99 mobo, Hyper 212 EVO cooler) 24/7 for a year and a half with no issue
-Runs cool enough at that oc (40C idle, 70C load) that I'm comfortable.
-Great price (was $390 when I got it, I see it's $409 now but that's still not bad imo)
-Fast. I can't go back to 4 cores after this.
Cons: -no iGPU. I would still never use it, but for some that only want more CPU horsepower and have no need for dedicated graphics, the inclusion would be nice. Also, if my GPU dies or I want to sell it when buying a new one, I can't use my PC until I get a new GPU. But that's not really a big enough complaint to dock any eggs, since you know there's no iGPU before buying.
Other Thoughts:
Would highly recommend, although right now a 6800K can be had for less and is probably slightly faster, so it just depends on what's cheapest when you're buying. In my case, 6800K wasn't out yet, so it was either a 5820K or 6700K, and more cores won. Seriously, I can't imagine going back to less than 6 cores and I hope the trend of higher core counts for less continues.
System for reference:
ASRock Extreme4 X99
i7 5820K @ 4 GHz
CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO (COUGAR Vortex fan added for push/pull)
Corsair Vengeance LPX 8x4GB DDR 2666 (2800 with XMP)
Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970
Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD
WD Black 1TB HDD
Fractal Define R5 Blackout Case
Pros: I bought this in March 2016. Runs quick and I haven't even overclocked it. No problems at all. Excellent value compared to the more expensive 8-core i7 that was brutally priced higher than this.
Cons: None
Pros: It's not terribly slow. I have it OC to 4Ghz, and so far, it's okay rendering some of my HD animation. It'll have to do for now since I can't return it.
Cons: Only 28 lanes. Causes many limitations for the memory and expansion slots with x99 Taichi mobo.
Other Thoughts: This is my first build on a computer and if I had known that this cpu only comes with 28 lanes, I would have gotten a different cpu. Unfortunately, it doesn't, so I can't use my Ultra M.2 slots with SSD on the mobo (because my mobo disables a bunch of things if you're only running with 28 lanes, apparently).
Pros:
Best 6 core cpu on the market.
Got it up to 4.6ghz
Use a dual Cosiar water cooler though.
Cons: I got it so i could game and stream at the same time. I've researched AMD ryzen has better software encoding for those that broadcast on Twitch. Quicksync is out of date. But Ryzen is a lot slower for a lot of other applications.

Pros: I've been gaming and rendering (Maya / 3DS max) with this CPU in my main rig since January 2016 and it hasn't held me back or let me down. Overclocked to 4.2 out of the box.
Cons: None so far
