Pros: very good!
Cons: never
Pros: Didn't need axillary USB cord for power. While it worked, it worked well.
Cons: One day about 6 months into using this hard drive, it refused to be recognized by the computer, and sat around obstinately making a beeping noise. Drive became unusable after this point.
Other Thoughts:
Google "Freeagent beeping"...you'll find that this is a common problem that can result from even looking at a Freeagent drive too hard.
The plus side is that Seagate will replace your new paperweight for you...if you happen to have the right packaging materials (electrostatic bag, 2 inches of surrounding solid foam, and a corrugated cardboard box). Seagate was very clear that any device not packaged correctly will be returned to you at your cost. If you don't happen to have the correct materials, Seagate is happy to refer you to a vendor, who will sell you a kit for $20 plus shipping.
If you manage to get it shipped correctly, congraduations! How long before this new hard drive fails??
Or, you could skip this product and get...well, anything else.
Pros:
As a hard disk, it's really good. It's fast, looks nice, and didn't complain when I formatted it to ext4 (some drives have software built into them that you can't easily get rid of; if I remember correctly, it had software, but the entire drive could still be formatted to get rid of the software).
I especially like the adapter that came with it. It can actually attach to and run any 2.5" SATA II drive.
Cons:
The day I came home for Christmas break, I plugged the drive it, it made some loud, sharp noises, and then wouldn't mount. When I unplugged it and plugged it back in, it made a faint, continuous beeping sound. (I'm assuming it's an error code saying it can't start).
Anyway, Seagate's warranty is pretty good and I'm in the process of RMA'ing. I didn't lose any valuable data, it was more of an inconvenience.
Other Thoughts:
I have backup copies of all the data, I just don't carry the backups with me, especially when I travel, so I'm without all the data on that drive for a few weeks. Pretty annoying; especially since I had hardly used it. I filled it up with data ONCE, it probably wasn't plugged into my computer more than a dozen times.
I've heard that Seagate drives are infamous for breaking down, but I've had pretty good experiences with them in the past. If the new one comes back and lasts long enough for me to get some decent use out of it, I'll write a positive review.
Pros:
Small size, price for external hard drive. Works perfect does what its supposed to. the case looks sexy and shiny.
the size and storage capacity is def a good perk to this.
Cons: some one please correct me but the so called backup software that came on the hard drive is just a trial version. also for esata or usb 3.0 you have to buy an GoFlex special adapter which could be from $20 - $60 on what your getting. also with the usb 2.0 adapter that came with it i realized it can be used as a regular sata drive.... but regular sata cables are not long enough... go figure so once i trimmed my sata cable down to fit its doing great.
Other Thoughts: i cut my fingers trying to trim my sata cable to fit into the hard drive. but to sum it up to me this Seagate drive it's just a big scam all in all if you want to use this to its full potential just like 80% of all external hard drives come included with the price, which would be buying the backup software and special esata, or usb 3.0 cable you could easily double how much you just paid for the GoFlex drive. i got this Seagate drive free on Christmas i would of RMA but Santa leaves no receipts.
Pros:
Compact size, slim unit.. Cable is about 15 inches long. I like the shape of the plug, as I can get a good thumb and finger hold on it. Nice LED light on it that shows when it is plugged in and started. Unit is quiet. Quiet is a good thing.
Option for many accessory cables for different connectors, such as upgrade to USB 3.0, eSata, HD tv, Firewire.
Cons:
If you plug it into a Windows OS with autorun enabled, it will enable the autorun.inf filed stored on the drive, which starts the GoFlex registration and backup software contained on the disk. As a precaution, I never have autorun or autoplay enabled on Windows, as i never like software to automatically run itself.
USB end should have come with a protective cap, as this unit is portable, and one would want to protect it when carrying it. Seagate should have thrown one in, as they are cheap.
Other Thoughts:
I first used this on a Linux machine. That way I could see what was on the disk. It contains backup software for both Windows and Mac machines, registration, and an autorun.inf file.
So as to avoid malicious anything, I copied the files that are on the disk to a DVD disk, and deleted same files from the GoFlex hard drive. Since I primarily use my GoFlex for storage, and not to continually backup my operating system, I really don't need this software, but saved it in case i want to sell the unit in the future. Seagate's webpage states you do not need to run the software to use the unit. True.
Pros: Portability, Ease of installation, great looks and very reliable
Cons: That you cannot use the software with any MacBooks!!
Pros: Worked wonderfully when it was working.
Cons: Didn't last one year. 500gb is a lot of data to lose. Use carefully.
Other Thoughts: This was my first external HD so take my word for what its worth.

Comments: The GoFlex adapter is interesting. Changes a mini USB to a combination SATA data and power. The adapter then plugs into the back of the drive (mates up very nicely too). Wonder if I can use any SATA drive with the adapter.
