I need extra space for a network video recorder for a some wireless IP cameras.  Would this work better than a 2-3 TB hard drive bare drive installed in one of Rosewills aluminum hard disk drive enclosure's?

I purchased this item originally for my TiVo DVR; however, despite the descriptions of it being used as a DVR expander it does not work with Tivo branded products and some other branded DVRs. I had to end up using it as an external backup drive for my computers. It does function as a DVR recorder for security systems that are affiliated with D-link. On the flip side, I also purchased a bare 4TB hard drive and the Roswell aluminum hard disk enclosure and the Barracuda hard  drive would not fit securely into the enclosure. The Roswell enclosure did not include any extra screws to secure the hard drive to the enclosure and therefore it did not prevent the hard drive from disconnecting from the enclosure interior components. I also encountered problems with matching up the screw holes on the hard drive with the screw holes that were provided inside the enclosure to protect the hard drive. I would highly recommend that you do your research to make sure that the hard drive you are purchasing will match up with the screw holes for security inside the enclosure with the holes on the hard drive. I had to repeatedly open up the enclosure to reconnect the hard drive because it kept disconnecting because it was not secure due to the failure of the matching of the security screw holes

Does this work on my laptop?

This drive is not a portable drive, i.e. it is not USB powered. It must be plugged into the wall. That said, there's no reason you can't use it with a laptop... I do.

I read quite a number of negative reviews on this product, although it's highly recommended when searching.
Is there a more reliable drive? Suggestions? Everyone I researched has some negative reviews.

I have had a Seagate Backup Plus 2TB drive for about three years and a Backup Plus HUB 4TB drive for over a year.  I use them regularly and they both have functioned without problem on my desktop running Win 10 Pro.  The Backup plus 2TB does occasionally disconnect and then reconnect itself from my Samsung Book 8 laptop (very irritating when that happens).  Laptop runs Win 10 Home.  I do not have any other backup drives with which to compare them, but I would purchase them again if necessary.  I do like the USB ports on the HUB.
