Great color arrays

Pros: I am very happy with the purchase! The color representation is great. Lighting mode is awesome with a lot to choose from. Build quality is premium. I like the mat texture, and the wrist wrest illumination is excellent without the logo being distracting.

Cons: I am not sure this is a con, but the logo on the top right corner of the keyboard (VIPER), I wish they had made it RGB as well. But for the price, this is very hard to beat.

Other Thoughts: Definitely Recommended

Great Keyboard

Pros: RGB LEDs look Fantastic

Strong Keyboard Frame

Media/Macro Keys/Volume Wheel

Nice Braided Cord

Ripple Mode is Cool

Easy to Use Software

Competitively Priced

Cons: At its price its very competitively priced, Id say the closet to this is the Corsair K70 RGB LUX which retails for about $35 more. While both keyboards are built very well the Corsair software is just more mature and more features. Not worth deducting an egg because the Software for the Viper V770 is very easy to use, but it should be noted that the competition software does have a slight edge.
Also if you want to download the software it links to a dropbox exe from Patriot website. Just a normal download would be nice instead of having to use a Dropbox account/email that has dropbox permission. This is free and takes just a click or two link your gmail account to dropbox then you can direct download the .exe.

Basically the only cons is the software compared to the competition. But software is easy to change/update so I like to see how it matures in the future. Structurally the keyboard is well made and solid.

Other Thoughts: Received the Patriot Viper V770 RGB Mechanical Keyboard model #PV770MRUMXGM for review.

The package arrived undamaged and very well packaged. This was my first experience with a patriot branded keyboard, I've used their ram many times over the 14 years or so, with no issues, and no failures so getting a chance to try this out was a treat.

Overall the product looks great, the key are very responsive and the RGB lighting is great. You can do a few preset lighting modes like Ripple and Raindrop by hitting on the Function key and the corresponding preset. In low light rooms, its just looks great, i was acting like a little kid just tapping away on ripple mode just enjoying the eye candy.

As said in the pro the Frame of the keyboard is very solid and rugged which is good for a device that will receive many many years of figure abuse :-) other fast key like volume wheel and media keys are nice to have and help round out the features. The 5 macro keys are easy to learn to setup. The software as a whole is very easy to use. As mentioned in the cons the software from Corsair is more mature and has more options. This something that with time Patriot can build on and update, so we will see what the future holds. The cords are nicely braided thats red/black in coloring.

This was my first run with Kailh switches and was surprised how nicely they performed compared to cherry switches. Not looking at the keyboard just doing a blind touch keystroke id be hard pressed to tell the difference.

Overall this is a great keyboard that offers high quality RGB lighting, great build quality, easy to use software and is priced competitively for a mechanical keyboard.

Ive been using this now as my main keyboard for the past month and half and been enjoying immensely. Will update in the future if New Software updates come around, and how the keyboard lasts. Overall great job Patriot at making a solid offering that does break the bank.

V770 great keyboard with great customer service

Pros: The Patriot Viper V770 is a very sturdy and brightly lit keyboard with a ton of great features. The RGB lighting is flexible with plenty of options for you to choose from with some custom profiles available in the software for both lighting and macro support as well. The keys are considerably quieter than my Gskill RGB keyboard with the same switches and the travel is shorter as well. This keyboard performs flawlessly not matter if you're gaming or just typing away at that book your writing. There are a plenty of built in lighting profiles with some built in customization as far as brightness, color pattern, and or speed. The wrist rest has a very cool light bar that's also able to be customized although it requires software to do so.

Added features such as the volume roller and multimedia rockers/buttons are well built and work great as do the macros. I'll end this section by saying that Patriot customer support was great to deal with and I'd be happy to deal with them anytime.

Cons: I didn't take an egg off for this because Patriot took prompt care of me and there is always a defect rate no matter what your buying. My first keyboard worked perfectly out of the box for about 2 hours before an entire row of keys from the left Shift key to the 3 on the number pad failed to light anymore although the keyboard still typed perfectly the lack of lighting on those keys was distracting but Patriot replaced the keyboard no questions asked and it was done promptly.

Other Thoughts: I really enjoy this keyboard compared to my more expensive Gskill and this one isn't buggy like it either. The lighting seems brighter with more built in options as well. The cables are braided and feel very durable with an added USB port on the keyboard for a mouse or headset is a nice feature as well as the plug for your headset. The software is easy to use unlike my Gskill.

Overall I believe this keyboard is worth every penny and upon my research trying to figure out my lighting issue on the first one I've decided that mine was a fluke with no complaints on this issue anywhere else and it's been out long enough if this was a design problem we'd know about it by now. Thanks Patriot for backing your product with ease and no hoops to jump through.

Cool lighting; solid feel; top quality!

Pros: As a gamer, I prefer durability, reliability, practicality, and that re-assuring feedback that most any mechanical keyboard offers. Backlit keys are a plus, as well. Though I was thinking more of a single color that could be dimmed or brightened as desired.

Multi-colored dynamic lighting was not very high on the priority list, though that is no longer the case. The Viper 770 offers a myriad of different lighting effects, which at first seem frivolous, but once you start playing around with them, they’re actually pretty cool. I find myself changing the lighting now and then just because I can!

There is also a little pull out ‘tray’ for which you can place your phone (or something else I suppose). At first I didn’t use it, thinking to myself, WHY would I put my phone there? But since there is a USB port at the top left side of the keyboard, and the tray is right there at the top of the keyboard, why NOT use it? So I plugged my phone in, placed it on the tray and let it charge; the screen is angled pointing right at you, so it’s easy to see.

The keyboard itself is relatively quiet for a mechanical keyboard. It’s easy to forget that it even is a mechanical keyboard. I play a lot of first-person shooters and am pretty hard on any keyboard. I’m left-handed and use the numeric keypad to move rather than WASD like normal people. I can’t count the times I’ve destroyed 4 and 8 on membrane keyboards because I’ve pressed the keys to hard during intense gaming. Yes, it’s probably just me, but I don’t have that problem with mechanical keyboards. I don’t see myself having that problem with this one (I’ve had it for less than a month, so I can’t attest to it’s long term durability just yet). It’s definitely heavier than your run of the mill regular keyboards, but that’s not really a problem. You’re not picking it up and moving it around! It’s quality construction that stays in place. Six rubber feet (3 if you use the flip outs to elevate/angle the top of the keyboard) make sure it stays in place. I personally prefer the keyboard angled rather than flat though I suppose there are some that prefer the latter.

The software is super easy to use and allows you to take full advantage of the keyboards features. Light effects for the keyboard itself, and separate effects for the wrist rests (Palm Rest as it’s called). The lighting effects can also be changed using the keyboard itself, but with the software, you can save specific effects in profile, and then simply load that profile when you desire that specific configuration. Any of the keys can be programmed (i.e you can program J to play music, open a file, open a folder, run a macro...) This is very nice especially for us left handed people who don’t use WASD normally. There are game developers out there who simply don’t think it’s good customer service to allow for keyboard re-mapping. Using this keyboard, that is not a problem for us, I simply create a macro using the Viper 770 software and viola, I can remap my keyboard for any game that doesn’t have re-mapping built in. You can also change response time and report rate, although I just leave those to default, because really, it’s a keyboard, not a mouse, so those are more ‘gimmicky’ settings than realistic settings.

Overall I really like this keyboard, I prefer it to 2 of the other 3 mechanical keyboards I’ve used, and it’s on par with that 1; and it beats ALL other regular keyboards I’ve ever used and still have to use when at work (can’t be carrying this around and swapping it out when working on any one of the 20,000 PCs in the work place!).

Cons: I couldn't really find much 'wrong' with this keyboard; however, It’s important to note that the wrist rest is attached magnetically; and in such manner, it MAY detach from the keyboard, although to be honest, I haven’t had that happen yet. It just sometimes feels it might. Previous keyboards I’ve owned had the wrist rests snap into place and thus were securely attached.

Other Thoughts: As I've said, I'd originally thought the lighting was a bit over the top, but once you have it, you really don't want to NOT have it!

Great Keyboard

Pros: **UPDATE**
The lightup wrist rest has failed. No amount of fiddling, tapping, or unhooking and rehooking it up seems to make it want to light. I will be knocking this down to 4 eggs and sincerely hoping that this event is not indicative of the build quality of the rest of the keyboard!

Original Review:

Note: I did not install the software on my PC as it is my work computer and IT won’t let me.

It’s a keyboard! The keys have a smooth, linear action and are easy to press. After some adjustment, I find that I am typing slightly faster on this than my old standard HP keyboard that came with my work machine. The trick is learning to press the keys gently – they require less force than a standard non-mechanical keyboard. I have no doubt that in another month, I will be even better and faster on this keyboard.

In no particular order, some of my favorite things about this keyboard:
- Many backlighting modes (I change them daily)
- Each key is its own LED (rather than having 3 or 5 areas of LEDs)
- The volume roller!
- The magnetic, LED-lit palm rest
- Sides of keyboard light up in sync with the keys
- No software required to change the backlighting (only required to set up macros and do further customization of lighting patterns)
- Aluminum frame means it feels sturdy and has minimal flex.
- Non-glossy frame means no obnoxious fingerprints.
- Num/scroll/caps lock keys illuminate when turned on
- Escape button is alone – no function button near it to accidentally hit
- Extra USB port!

Cons: I think my coworker is getting tired of hearing the constant sound of mechanical keys clicking, but as I get more used to this keyboard and learn how to type faster on it, I’m pressing the keys softer and making less noise. Also, he will get over it!

The cord is fairly stiff and thick, which makes it hard to route cleanly. I have lots of little Velcro wraps holding it where I want it but after several weeks, it still doesn’t lay flat.

In order to use the additional USB port on the keyboard, there is a second USB cable you have to plug into your machine. In other words, the keyboard does not act as a USB hub, which is a pain. Fortunately, there is only one cable that comes out of the keyboard, the it splits at the end to plug into your PC. On top of this, the port is only USB 2.0, so don’t bother plugging external hard drives in unless you like watching the green Windows loading bar.

Other Thoughts: This is my first mechanical keyboard that I’ve spent any real time using and it has definitely taken some adjustment. I was expecting super springy keys like the old IBM mechanical keyboards we use in our shop; instead these keys are linear, smooth, and require far less force to press. I’ve been using this as my only keyboard on my work computer for the last few weeks and the more I use it, the more I like it.

Solid, fast, pretty much perfect keyboard

Pros: Short stroke Kailh red keys give enough tactile response to enable me to type at an efficient speed.

Media keys are quick to learn. The play/pause button is unique, but once I figured it out I liked it. You are basically flipping a lever-type toggle key. Other media keys are more traditional.

Macro recorder software is functional and easy to understand. As always, it would be nice to see what gets generated in an editor that allows me to toggle between hex/ascii/high-level macro, but the editor does have a basic edit function which is more than some programmable keyboards offer.

Very solid construction. I don't like the occasional squeak from the spacebar, but everything else just feels solid and functional.

Braided cable with a sturdy boot that won't ever get tugged hard enough to cause problems.

Palm rest has a good feel. My hands like it.

Cons: USB port is on the left side. I am left-handed. This means that, when I have my gaming mouse plugged into the port, I have my keyboard slightly offset from the center of my body to make room for the cord next to my mouse pad. When I sit down and start typing, sometimes I don't see what I expect on the screen, like "dvtrrm" and I have to shift my hands. I may get used to it, but most likely, I will just not use the usb port, which is a little bit of an irritant. Why did the manufacturer not put the USB on the back, next to the cable boot, or anywhere on the back? This shows blatant disregard for the lefties of the world. Maybe someday we lefties will mobilize and have a snowflake parade to get sympathy/empathy, and I may just break this keyboard in protest on national tv or something. Or not. It is too nice to waste on something like that.

Programming the backlights is an adventure. Be very careful about changing too much in any one step - change a very few things, hit apply. Change a few more, hit apply.

Other Thoughts: I am a diehard MX Blue person. I loved my Model M buckling spring, and I cried when they pried it out of my hands and gave me a mushy nasty Chicony "clone". Now that I can get a solid keyboard with my choice of keys, I will always go for the blue. I wish this company would offer this model in a Blue configuration. A noteworthy "Blue" option to consider is
G.SKILL RIPJAWS KM780R RGB Mechanical Gaming Keyboard - Cherry MX RGB Blue
I can't say enough good about that keyboard.

If you aren't absolutely nuts and don't mind the reasonably good tactile response of a Red configuration, this keyboard is an ideal, last-you'll-ever-buy, keyboard.

Incredible value, but not perfect.

Pros: * Red switches for gaming.
These are Kailh Red switches which, in my experience, have the same feel as Cherry MX Red (for comparison). There is no tactile bump at the bottom of the switch, and it is very light to press. Excellent response times for gaming and even regular typing feels very smooth and responsive. It all comes down to personal preference, though.

* Viper Software is easy and intuitive, but very basic.
Don't expect any frills from this. It allows you to change effects, brightness, speed, colors, and that's about it. For customizing the RGB, it gets the job done. It also includes Macro setup for the 5 Macro keys, and various profiles to save your settings.

* USB & Headphone jacks.
The board comes with passthrough jacks, each on the side of the motherboard. This is a nice, unexpected bonus that I haven't seen on any of my keyboards before. Additionally, the power cable is braided, which is always nice to see.

* Costar stabilizers.
The bar keys are using the costar (metal bar) stabilizer, as opposed to the mushy Cherry. This gives the bar keys a more responsive feel. These are increasingly uncommon on modern keyboards, I'm glad to see it's still being used here.

* Solid, all-metal build.
This is probably the sturdiest keyboard I've ever felt. The entire build is aluminum, it feels rock solid and totally smooth. It doesn't rattle, vibrate, or slide. It's a joy to handle.

Cons: * Keys are louder than you probably expect.
Compared to Cherry Reds, these Kailh Reds are louder. Some people like loud 'clacks' on their mechnical keyboards, other people don't want to annoy those around them. Just be aware of what you're getting yourself into!

* Onboard USB is only 2.0.
This will severely limit bandwidth to about 40-50 MB/s. Not a good choice if you're using it for data transfer. It will work fine for other devices, however. I don't think it was really designed for USB Flash Drives.

* Squeaky bar keys.
You'll probably need to apply your own grease to the stabilizers on these. It's a side-effect of the Costars, however most manufacturers apply their own grease to prevent it. It took me a few minutes to fix, I used generic plastic-safe lubricant.

Other Thoughts: The lettering on the caps appears to be laser-etched (ABS Plastic) which means they will smudge over time. Still though, there are worse options and this is acceptable for most keyboards in my experience. I didn't have any problems setting up the lighting effects or macros, everything was very straight-forward and worked as I expected it to. Overall it was a pleasant keyboard to use, the Kailh switches hold up to Cherry Reds in my experience, and still feel great to use.

Considering all of the features offered by the V770, it's an incredible value.
