Lasted 4 years

Pros: Lasted for 4 years

Cons: Internet would intermittently stop. Maybe once a day or less, and itself turn back on. Was something I felt I could live with because it would last for maybe 5 minutes. Recently moved to a new place, and the modem does not pick up on the internet in two different locations (tried at parent's house). No luck

30 day warranty

Pros: no TWC monthly fee; worked initially after TWC resent signal.

2018 Edit: The disconnects were on TWC's end. The modem is still going strong. Spectrum who bought out TWC recently upgraded speeds to 100mbps and the modem can handle it. Speed tests have resulted in up to 118mbps avg.

Cons: The disconnects have progressively worsened. Now, it disconnects repeatedly over the course of an hour. Logs don't show any disconnect activity.

2018 Edit: disconnects were on TWC's end. Internet still slows to a crawl every 3-4 days (likely TWC/Spectrum).. I put the modem on a Christmas tree timer which reboots it nightly. Rarely see a slow down now.

Other Thoughts: Disappointing to find out warranty is only from authorized dealers. Forums states there is no user based firmware available and some feel it is a TWC effort to force users back to rental fees. Which is my next option.

2018 Edit: in the end the modem works and saved rental fees although these were eventually dropped. At this stage, I'd go with the newer model that apparently has more bands to future proof your system.

Plug and Play on Comcast

Pros: Plug and play. All I had to do was call Comcast to add it to my account and initialize it.
Two mounting direction options.
Wall-mounting template provided in instructions.
Comes with a Cat 5e cable.
Clean and easy to understand all around.

I finally save the $7/month I'd normally "put in a shredder" by "renting" a modem.

Cons: Front lights are SUPER bright. So bright, in fact, that the room does not need a nightlight as the entire unit is lit up like a Christmas tree! I ended up opening the modem up and painting white-out on the LEDs just to quell them. It took two coats just to make them reasonable! This, alone, cost an egg.
Has a Power brick/wall wart. Can't we have a short length from a regular power plug and then an in-line transformer? I ended up getting a short extension so that I can have it use the plug next to my router's power brick (also on an extension).

Other Thoughts: This is going to pay for itself, simply by not paying rental fees, in a year.

Motorola, why did you use such bright 3-color LEDs for the front panel and no shielding for the light they emit? Next time opt for lower MCD-rated LEDs and shield the area they emit their light so they don't light up the entire unit.

The manual states that if you can't access the modem (192.168.100.1) you need to call the ISP. This is not something that Motorola can control. I'm going to give my ISP a call about not being able to access the status page. I use that page to monitor the signal coming in to my house and it's necessary, in case I'm having signal issues, for me to self-diagnose problems. *EDIT* ISP re-enabled access. This helped me find out that their backbone was causing my connection problems instead of their typical "it's your equipment" excuse.

The modems I've owned are a Motorola SB5100 and UBEE U10C035. The Motorola SB5100 served me well for over a decade but the speed I was getting was being limited by it's max of ~32 mbit/s (4 MBytes/s). The UBEE was a rental and was stable. I simply just wanted to own my own modem to save the money in the long run versus "renting".

Not that great

Pros: Well, it powers on and still runs

Cons: It just doesn't run very well.
Frequent Connection drops requiring you to manual power cycle the modem.
Gets worse with age.

Other Thoughts: Kept running and got a few years out of it but after a while I kept getting disconnects and would have to power cycle it. This became more and more frequent. Ran the same modem for my parents and they had the same issues as well but more often. Needless to say I got tired of being their on demand tech support. Service used is Time Warner/Spectrum. With my parents I went back and forth with TWC verifying their end of things was right between hardware at the street and so on. We removed all unnecessary amps/splitters from the house and ran the line dedicated to the modem only as my parents only have internet and no longer have cable TV. Still got frequent drops. With my house, it's new construction with all new line to the current high speed standard. No splitters/amps needed and running dedicated straight to the modem. Still drops. Replaced with Zoom modems and no issues since. Parents been running a Zoom for over a year and not a single issue. I've been running one for the last few weeks and smooth so far. Surfboard's are buggy, don't bother. I'll stick to Zoom's from now on.

Been using this one for a few years now.

Pros: It's DOCSIS 3.0 and supports most conventional home internet services. Usually if there has been a problem with signal, it's a line problem and not a problem with this thing.

Cons: It's white so it doesn't match the rest of my stuff.

Other Thoughts: Buy your own modem and don't pay the cable company $40 a month to use one of theirs. It's too painful to return their equipment when you move and these are cheaper than ever now.
