The Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM is a standard zoom lens with a versatile zoom range allowing it to respond to a variety of shooting situations. Released in early 1998, it's Canon's first lens to feature Image Stabilizer that compensates for hand shake to deliver sharp, crisp images even in low light condition without the need of tripod or flash. Premium optical performance is achieved via lens construction of 16 elements in 12 groups. The Ultrasonic Motor provides fast and quiet AF operation, and enables full-time manual focus override for precise focus tweaking even in the AF mode. The inner focusing design means the front of the lens will not rotate during focusing, thus special filter effect like polarizer will not be affected. Additionally, this lens comes in a relatively compact design and low weight of 540g, making it an all-round zoom lens that can be carried around wherever your travels take you.

  • newegg Image Stabilizer Canon Optical Image Stabilizer technology makes handheld photography more practical at slow shutter speeds, accommodating more low-light shooting situations than ever before. Canon Optical Image Stabilizer technology uses miniature sensors and a high-speed microcomputer built into the lens. The sensors analyze vibrations and apply correction via a special stabilizing lens group that shifts the image parallel to the focal plane. Motion blur is canceled, resulting in a sharper image.
  • newegg Ultrasonic Motor The Ultrasonic Motor delivers fast and quiet autofocus performance, which is particularly important to video recording using this lens.
  • newegg Full-Time Manual The full-time manual focusing enables the photographer to manually tweak focus without switching out of AF mode.
  • newegg Inner Focusing An inner focusing lens has the focusing lens group(s) in front of the diaphragm, which allow for compact optical systems that produce faster AF. And because the front of the lens does not rotate to focus, filter orientation remains stationary for unaffected effect.

Great all purpose lens BUT...

Pros: This lens is a great lens for walk around. Coupled with my Canon Rebel t1i it takes sharp pictures due to the high quality glass

Cons: How this lens zooms makes it get some dust underneath the from element of the lens. Just google "canon 28-135mm lens + dust.
And many results will come up

Other Thoughts: No matter what. U will be impressed by this lens.

Great for the price.

Pros: Zoom range is pretty good on my 40D. Fits most circumstances. I think I will be using this for a long time.

Cons: Of course a wider range is always better if picture quality is equal.
There is some lens creep but not real bad. Due to max aperture it does have it limitations in very low light without tripod.

Other Thoughts: Auto focus seems to work quite well even in somewhat low light.

Great Kit Lens

Pros: - Great Image Quality.
- 28mm-135mm zoom is great for portraits.
- Very sturdy lens.
- Great zoom range for most applications.

I've been shooting with this lens for 90% of my college level project with both film and digital. This is an excellent lens and is definately one you want to hang onto.

Cons: - A bit heavy, but like I said, very sturdy.

Other Thoughts: Purchase this lens if you like a great all around lens for not too much. That, or purchase a 40D and call it a day. Probably one of the clearest non-L lenses you can buy.

great walkaround lens for the price

Pros: This is a GREAT lens, especially for full-frame body. It has excellent color and contrast (not L-quality, but also not at L-lens prices). The lens focus quiet and fast. The IS helps for those situations where you use a slower shutter.

The 135mm reach (especially on a cropped body) is a much welcomed focal length, especially for street photography (can photograph something from across or down the street).

Cons: This lens is not wide enough when used on a cropped body. The EF-S 17-85 is a better choice when you need wide on a cropped body; but the EF-S 17-85 lacks the reach of this lens.

Other Thoughts: If 28mm is not wide enough, take a step back. I now use this lens (EF 28-135 IS USM) whenever I am outdoors and use the EF-S 17-85 IS USM lens when I am indoors when space is tighter (no room to take a step backwards).

MMMM lovely lens

Pros: This is a great walk around, I have two other "L" lenses and only thing it lacks is the contrast and speed of larger aperture, When switching to this lens from an L your pics might seem a lil "white washed" but turn up the contrast on your camera and you get a lil closer to the beauty of the colorful L series...

Cons: Dust pump........

Other Thoughts: Love this lens!

Decent zoom lens

Pros: Fast autofocusing USM, image stabilization is great - more than just hype. This is a perfect "convenience" or "walkabout" lens; it has a great focal range, a relatively wide 28mm at one end and 135mm at full zoom. Great value, especially at the Egg. ($500 - $600 in stores).

Cons: Not the best lowlight performer despite the IS. At any aperture less than f/5.6 or so, images are quite soft. This lens is at its best at f/8 and above in my opinion.

A good knock around lens

Pros: This is a great starter lens. I call it my walk-around lens because if I take my 40D out for personal photos (it's a backup used in conjunction with our 5D) it's not life or death if something happens to it. The IS function is great and really allows for lower shutter speeds and ISO's when light isn't abundant. The 28-135 (38-220 approx at 1.6x) is great and can multitask very well. The build quality is average and isn't too heavy for the average Joe.

Cons: Focus is soft and slow. This lens in particular is very lathargic with it's focus speed. You can easily miss a shot waiting for it to grab a focus plane in anything but exceptional lighting. It also seems to have whats called a soft focus. Simply put at equal focus length another lens will focus a sharper picture.

Other Thoughts: This is a great lens for a everyday shooter. It's range is nice and image stabilization is an amatuers dream. I love having it for a walk-around lens, but it will not deliver in a professional setting. Aperture is too narrow and focus is soft and slow.

Adequate lens for a serious photographer

Pros: Good value, decent all around lens.

Useful range of focal lengths for general shooting, even on an APS-C body.

Image stabilization works well on stationary subjects.

Focus is nice and sharp at longer focal lengths.

Adequate performance as a macro lens for medium sized (soda can or larger) objects.

Cons: Unacceptably soft focus at short focal lengths (< 50mm) at all apertures, at least on my sample.

Also, the seals popped on mine after a month or two, letting two BIG pieces of dust into the inner workings.

28mm doesn't give a very wide field of view on an APS-C sensor body. It's OK for outdoor work, but you'll find yourself backing up all the time when shooting groups indoors.

Other Thoughts: I got this from Newegg as the kit lens with my 40D. It's a great value as part of the kit, and a decent value if bought alone.

It's not a replacement for the 24-70 f/2.8L or the 24-105 f/4L IS, but then it's also less than half the price of either of those lenses.

It's a great lens for vacation snapshots, and an acceptable lens for serious photography at longer focal lengths. If you can't afford an L series zoom, this isn't a bad choice.
